Muscular distro phy campaign B.C. boy is on poster On Sept. 6 and 7, Labor Day weekend, five-year-old Collin Andersen, of Abbots- ford, B.C., will be on tele- vision, and, like any other chile, he is excited at the prospect and thinks it will be “lots of fun.” It's not that Collin is luckier than any other five- yera-old. It's just that he is different. He has muscular hy, ah Collin got progressively worse, That's what the dis- ease does. It spreads, slowly but surely, through the body, wasting away the muscles, and’ collapsing the body till the heart and lungs can no longer function. Collin couldn't run or skip or even walk with the other kids. He had to crawl. He had no strength and he was slow p ‘y mus- cle-wasting disease. It is the first time a Canadian has been selected as poster child for muscular dystrophy. The past five years haven't been easy for the Andersens, Before he was 16 months old, Coliin’s parenis began to worry. He looked strong and healthy enough, but, as he got older, his legs seemed to have no strength. He had trouble walking and had to lean forward and use his arms to help him climb up steps. Often he jsut crawled. It was painful to watch. The doctors told Lynn and Ben that Collin had spinal muscualr atrophy and that there is no cure. “Just help him to adjust,” they said. “that's all you can do.” — Pp lly slow. He was always left behind. He tired easily and quickly. And it was torture — of a kind. Soon, Collin didnt go out to play in the park. Now is he five and he has never played baseball. He has never played tag, or hopscotch, or hockey, or soccer. Although Collin lives in a world that is frustrating to many, he has, remarkably and cheerfully, accepted his situation. He has his own strength — inner strength — and he has courage. He gets these qualities from his parents, for Lynn and Ben have plenty of both. To- gether the three of them have overcome many of the problems associated with this crippling disease. Pledge centre will be open in Trail The Jerry Lewis Muscular Dystrophy Telethon takes place each year on the Labor Day weekend. Again this year, the Warfield Volunteer Fire Department is com- mitted to operate a pledge centre in the Warfield Fire Hall, from 8 p.m. Sept. 6 through to 3:30 p.m. Sept. 7. Last year the fire depart- ment pledged $24,000. This year it is reaching for The pledge telephone num- ber will be 368-9194 in the Trail area, and collect calls will be accepted. The number will be aired on KREM TV, Collin learned to ride a horse through the ‘Pacific Riding for the Disabled’ program, and in doing so found a friend in “Duchess”, a gentle and tolerant horse, And he swims too, Ben, with fatherly pride, says that Collin can now swim a few feet from the poolside and return. And just recently, Collin has found another new and valuable friend. An Amigo wheelchair. Not an ordinary wheelchair, this one has three sets of wheels, a carrier basket, a horn, a rear plat- form for one passenger and it is battery powered. Now, Collin can get around, and despite the chair's formidable appearance, he handles it with ease and skill. Collin doesn't have to sit in his bedroom window any- more and watch the other kids playing in the park. Now he has some freedom and independence and can join them — for a while. And that’s all he really want. It's not easy for Collin or Lynn or Ben, and it will get harder. Collin's life expect- ancy is no more than 25 or 80 years. But, Collin is excited. He is going to be on the television. And, maybe he is lucky. Luckier anyway, for the moment, than the other approximately 16,000 people suffering from one form or another of muscualr dys- trophy in Canada. Medical research is seeking a cure, and the Muscualr Dystrophy Association of Canada works constantly to raise funds to provide the braces, the out- ings and the wheelchairs for children like Collin. The inti the re- channel 2, Spoki CJAT radio station will be broad- casting live from the pledge centre. All money pledged in Can- ada stays in Canada. P search grants to develop the equipment and find the cure. It is asking for help, for Collin and the thousands like him.
