Ny. , 82 Castlégar News September 11, 1988 2 Lastle SPORTS Gretzky enjoys Kings training , By The Canadian Press Wayne Gretzky is eager ot get back to work so he can put the distractions of an off-season trade out of his mind, he said on Friday after taking his physical exam upon reporting to the Victoria training camp of the Los Angeles Kings. Gretzky's marriage to actress Janet Jones, the subsequent trade that sent him from the Edmonton Oilers to the Kings and a rich new contract have combined to significantly rearrange his life. With the skates back on his feet and a stick in his hands, he can concentrate on what he likes to do best: score goals. “I'm excited about being here,” he said. “It's different, but a change is always good.” Because of Gretzky, the Kings are receiving more attention than usual as they stroll around Victoria and Gretzky's new teammates like it. “It's going to be nice for a change to be under the microscope a little,” said veteran forward Dave Taylor. In Montreal, Guy Lafleur, 87, who was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame on Wednesday, will pack his bags and drive to Trois-Rivieres to attempt a comeback with the New York Rangers. He retired from the Montreal Canadiens nearly four years ago. “At the end of my career, I put a lot of pressure on myself,” he says. “I wasn’t scoring. Today, it's different. I'm more positive about things and I feel a lot better mentally.” In Wilmington, Mass., the Boston Bruins opened camp with a strong desire to prove that last spring’s trip to the Stanley Cup final was no fluke. “We're definitely going to have a better team for the first game of the season and by playoff time we're going to be even better,” said head coach Terry O'Reilly. Of concern is defenceman Gordie Kluzak's left knee. He missed two of the last four seasons because of the knee and he hurt it two weeks ago by squatting. Fluid is collecting. Kluzak skated Friday and the doctors are watching. In Mount Lebanon, Pa., new head coach Gene Ubriaco has picked a theme for his Mario Lemieux-led Pittsburgh Penguins: “We owe you one.” The Penguins owe their fans for coming out in record numbers to watch a.team that has missed the playoffs for six years in a row, he says. In Chicago, new head coach Mike Keenan, formerly of the Philadelphia Flyers, gave an early warning to the veterans that they'd have to work hard to keep their “Experience does not always translate into success,” he said. “The competition should make the veterans want to try that much harder,” The Toronto Maple Le: are holding camp in Newmarket, Ont., and general manager Gord Stellick has made it clear to head coach John Brophy that a calmer and more orderly approach is needed. “We don't need crisis management,” Stellick, said. “Last season was like a permanent migraine headache.” The Vancouver Canucks open camp in Parksville, and Trevor Linden, the No, 2 pick in the entry draft last June, will be participating without a contract. The Canucks have taken dut a disability insurance policy in excess of $300,000 to protect Linden while he's in camp. “The way I look at it, whether I'm signed or not, I still-have to make the team,” said Linden. The Canucks signed Ray Staszak on Thursday after the player reached a settlement with Detroit. The Red Wings gave him a five-year, $1.4-million contract in 1985 when he was still in college. Staszak’s career has gone nowhere, but the Canucks are hoping the 26-year-old right winger can turn things around. The Quebec Nordiques’ Walt Podsdubny and the New Jersey Devils’ Pat Verbeek both agreed to multiyear contracts Friday. The Giants have already placed punter Sean Landeta and backup left cornerback Wayne Haddix on injured reserve. Mark Collins, the regular left corner, has a-sprained ankle, although he's expected to start. The game also marks something of a scheduling oddity. It’s the fourth time in three years the Giants have faced San Francisco and Washington in consecutive weeks. New Orleans, meanwhile, will try to get back on track against what figures to be an easier opponent — on the road against the Atlanta Falcons, who lost 31-17 to Detroit last week. “Our defence didn’t play well at all,” Saints coach Jim-Mora said after the 49ers ended New Orleans’ 12-game regular-season winning streak. “Any time our offence scores 33 points, I would hope that we would win the ball game.” Atlanta, meanwhile, outgained De- troit 359-230. But the Faleons had four turnovers, all converted into touchdowns. The Chicago-Indianapolis game figures to be a ground war. The Colts have installed Jack Trudeau in place of Gary Hogeboom at quarterback, indicating they will concentrate even more on Eic Dickerson, who ran for 109 yards in a 17-14 overtime loss to Houston last week and caught six passes for 98 more. Canadian men’s basketball team ready for Olympics VANCOUVER (CP) — Team unity and an upbeat tempo are the keys to success for Canada in men’s bas. ketball at the Olympic Games in Seoul later this month, says veteran forward Gerald Kazanowski. The Canadians will be smaller and may be quicker than the team that placed fourth in the 1984 Olympies in Los Angeles, a unit that depended on the strong inside game of forwards Kazanowski and Danny Meagher, plus centre Greg Wiltjer. “The basics are the same as four years ago and the unity is there,” Kazanowski said this week. “The difference is we're a smaller team, so we'll rely on a faster game and quicker defence.” Canada no longer has the tower- ing, six-foot-11 Wiltjet under the boards and Kazanowski is a last minute addition after playing in Europe. That may leave the bulk of the scoring in the backcourt with veterans Eli Pasquale and Jay Triano. The Canadian men were a longshot to qualify for Seoul, but came through under pressure in Monte- video, Uruguay, while the higher- ranked Canadian women's team failed to advance. “We all feel fairly confident now that things are under control,” said Kazanowski, 27, a native of Nanaimo. Canada is in a preliminary-round division with such international powerhouses as Brazil, the United States and Spain. Canada will also play Egypt and China in the opening round-robin format.
