The Kootenays are next, and Nelson is to be the regional correspondence centre for students in the Nelson, Castlegar, Arrow Lakes (Nakusp-New Denver), Trail, Grand Forks, Kettle Valley, Creston-Kaslo, Cranbrook, Windermere, Kimberley, Fernie, and Golden school districts As meticulously detailed by district director of instruction Bill Evin in a submission to the provincial gover nment that won Nelson the new centre, Nelson is the most geographically cen- tral of these 12 Kootenay school districts. To be located in the vacated North Shore elementary school, the Nelson-based correspondence school for the Kootenays will mean local em: ployment to the equivalent of 2.5 clerical workers and one teacher, plus 20 to 30 contract markers, McLure Says. It will bring an initial boost of $88,000 in start-up money into the new Nelson economy — for equipment, as well as to fix up North Shore to meet the centre's needs — plus an annual budget of $365,000. “As each of these centres has been established, enrolment skyrocketed, The variety of classes the students can choose from is colossal,"” McLure noted of the new centres he visited. Part of that success has been the per sonal touch — although contact may be by telephone, Prince George and has * Fort St. John both have photos of all their long-distance students tacked up on the main office bulletin boards. McLure has also served as principal at Salmo elementary and Gordon Sargent primary schools.
