Years at home may mean years during which the lose earning power, contacts and seniority. And new employers are not likely to accept years old references, no matter how glowing resumes might be. Unfortunately, when a woman takes an extended leave to raise a family, there often is a societal prejudice that she is not dedicated to her work. There are still many people who feel that women are just building a career to pass the time while they are waiting to begin a family or to have something fall back on once the chicks have left the nest. A new beginning So, when a mother returns to the workforce, she may have to be more qualified -and comp than currently employed. And she may have to begin proving herself all over again with a new employer or new co-workers. Time, experience and the 75 percent of young mothers now in the workplace, will surely overcome the reticence of employers, but patience may be the best guide to progress. THE ROLE OF STEPMOTHER ‘The role of the ste] is not exactly an easy one. But it's one that more and more women will be grappling with. Some-because they have suffered through the agonies of divorce. It's easy to remember Kickoff Day and the residential canvass when there is a barrage of advertis- ing during the two or three months leading up to these events. Adver- tising budgets, however, are limit- ed - ours seems to di like order to remember, along with all the other things we need to remember, that the United Way is a part of our lives, we need to be reminded. We need to be reminded that our agencies are working not only through the late summer and fall when United Way advertising is at its busiest but also through the often dreary cold of winter, through the blossoms of spring and through the summer holidays. One way to achieve this ding would be to ice cream on a hot day. Support from the newspapers and radio sta- tions in this area is outstanding - none are more dedicated to com- munity support than these people - but there are limits to what they can do, too. So how do we remember the United way when we're trying to get ready for Christmas? How do we remember the United way as we come out out of the late winter doldrums and start preparing for spring? How do we remember the Unit- ed Way when we're organizing summer activities and vacation? Anybody who thinks that there is nothing to do in this city just doesn’t understand the situation. In @ Turner remove the limit from out advertis- ing budget. Unfortunately this would have the effect of reducing the money available to support our agencies, which is not what we want to do, even in the short term. We have another idea which might work better. We are looking for a sponsor from within the Castlegar area we hear you groan, “ can afford that?”. Neboay can. We know that. Most of our directors are, or have been, involved in busi- ness in this community. We would love financial sponsorship but we know that it’s not a realistic The sponsor we hope to find is one who is interested in supporting us in ways other than monetary. Here's the plan.... Sponsorship would be in the form of recognition of the United Way; the form this recognition takes Castlegar and District United Way and might also include the United way logo. Another possibility is the display of United Way materi- als in the sponsor's place of busi- ness. The point is to increase the visibility of the United Way by associating it with the sponsor. What does the sponsor get for this? Recognition goes two ways; if the sponsor is willing to recog- nize and support the United Way, the United Way would publicly recognize and support the sponsor. Our advertising budget is limited but it could certainly include state- ments that the sponsor supports us, as well as the sponsor's logo. Should the sponsor wish to put ‘on a gala promotion of some kind, United Way could be time paid employee as well as being the key person who holds the Castlegar and District United Way together. Directors serve one or more terms and then depart, agency coordinators change; the constant central figure that allows these changes to go on without completely disrupting the entire effort is Nona. A life-long resident of the West K ys, Nona was born in available to serve the sponsor's coffee and doughnuts, hand out balloons, etc. These are some ideas that come immediately to mind. Should a potential corporate sponsor wish to discuss specifics, 1 am sure that more and better ideas would emerge. Those of us who survive the hoped-for stampede of businesses wanting to take advantage of this offer will be going out into the business community with our mes- sage in the near future. In the meantime, anybody wishing to get involved in United Way sponsor- ship can contact our office in the Chamber of Commerce building or by phone at 365-7331 and talk to....
