Because this is a long weekend, we're taking you on an overnight tour and staying in Nakusp. There are two ways to get (o Nakusp, by boat or by road. The Do-Un-To Barge will take you on an all day cruise up the Arrow Lakes to Nakusp while you enjoy a terrific BBQ, the scenery or even a jet boat ride. Your other choice is to drive. If you are driving find the intersection of Highway 22 and 3 and turn east onto Highway 3. Follow the signs that indicate Highway 3A and we'll be driving cyclists who also enjoy the trip. The Slocan Valley is nestled between the Valhalla and Slocan ranges of the Selkirk Mountains. The area is rich in history and we can only scratch the surface here, so please, as you travel, make sure to read the local visitor guides, and feel free to stop along the way. By 1891 silver was discovered at Sandon and by 1892 New Den- ver, Nakusp, Silverton and Kaslo were the established supply routes. The Doukhobors arrived carly in the 1900s and they established it the Lower down the airport hill rg signs directing you to Nelson. When you arrive in New Den- ver, three km north of Silverton, the Motherlode Bookstore is open seven days a week with a great stock of kites, cards and in the Interior. About 1,500 were relocated to New Denver and they lived in a compound in an area known as The Orchard. They formed The Kyowakai across North America, Weisbrich paintings are highly valued. From New Denver, we're now- travelling north on Highway 6 to Nakusp. The road climbs up on the north side of Trout Lake and when you get to Gerrard there is a pull off area and signs where you can read about the history of the giant Ger- rard rainbow trout and their habits. At Duncan Dam you can tour the area and see the catch- ment pond and the Creek, the area flattens out and the lush area Meadow Creek gives you another taste of the fertile, rugged and versatile Kootenay region. Stay on Highway 31 following the north ‘arm of Kootenay Lake all the way to Kaslo. Kaslo celebrated its 100th birth- day in 1993, and it is a town rich in the mining history of the Koote- nays.
