(CP) — In a land bypassed by travellers, in a quiet county of white houses and white churches, a marriage of old and new technology is thriving unobtrusively at the Dominion Chair factory. Brothers William and George Fulton started it in 1860 when they dammed the Bass River, built a sawmill and began making chairs. Today the river no longer generates the power, but the plant's sawmill still cuts hardwood logs brought in from the surrounding forests. From those planks, country furniture — known familiarly to generations of Maritimers as Bass River chairs, rockers and tables — is still cut, glued, planed, shaped and assembled in the big warehouse-like building. “This is a one-industry town, no doubt about it,” says John Ballard, an Alberta-born entrepreneur who became the biggest employer in the village of 400 when he successfully tendered for the business in 1985 after it went into receivership. SAGGING FIRM Ballard took over a 125-year-old company with an d factory pi ing antique-style furniture far from urban markets, competing with mass production in a world of chrome and plastic. But the company has survived in spite of — perhaps because of — these challenges. Bass River is along a two-lane road on the north shore of the Minas Basin in northwestern Nova Scotia, a half-hour's drive west of Truro. You know you've reached Bass River when a weathered grey two-storey building with a faded Dominion Chair Co. sign appears at the side of the road. The plant, rebuilt in 1948 after the most recent of five fires, sits-on the river bank. “It’s a place where warm incandescent lights have not been replaced by fluourescent tubes, where work counters are worn smooth from the press of a thousand hands, where 66-year-old Wally Davis has worked for the last 32 years and where 56-year-old Phyllis Fulton can cut and shape 350 seats a day. Sawdust is gently pervasive, in the air and on the floor, sometimes in the eyes and nose. In the finishing department on the second flood, lacquer smells can't be completely eliminated by fans. Cloaking all is the constant rhythm of ancient machinery, the sound of sanders and lathes dominated by the sharp whine of the sawmill's metre-wide blade as it slices. yellow birch and rock maple. No-smoking signs are unnecessary. The 60 or so workers know their livelihood can easily go up in smoke. “Wes, this is it, this is our life here,” says Evelyn Suthekland, 48. “When it went into receivership, we thought that was it — what would happen to this place; the community, the people?” Sutherland, a deceptively fragile-looking mother who packs and stacks the furniture for shipment throughout the country, says all the workers sighed with relief when the company was bought, but many wondered what changes were in store. CHANGES MADE Changes did come into effect — made by a sharp businessman out to build a moneymaker in sleepy Bass River. Ballard, trained as a mechanical engineer in the petroleum field, readily admits he didn't know a whole lot aboyt furniture-making when he bid for Dominion Chair. 7But,-“I know: uring.” From his office in nearby Debert, the 44-year-old father of six oversees interests that range from insulation to fast food. At Bass River, he designed and had built a high-tech dehumidification kiln that can prepare 40,000 board-feet of wood for furniture-making in 18 days. In the little old kiln, it took nine months for the wood to dry. A new faster-drying finish was developed, designs were altered, an oak line was added, and recently a new $70,000 lathe began shaping wood for bed parts for a New Glasgow Today it’s more important than ever to fatten the piggie bank ... and to use the Want Ads! Ballard expects to make money again this year, but declined to release figures. “Our sales are clearly on the upswing — we've increased our sales in spite of the fact the retail market right now is not very good. We've picked up a lot of additional sales from the institutional markets, like restaurants.” Chairs and tables stamped Bass River, N.S., can be found in Bass River Factory Outlet Stores in the Maritimes, in furniture stores on the West Coast, and in nearly every provine ein between. In addition, Ballard has beey trying to get a foothold in the U.S. market, though the going has been tough. “Everybody tells us it takes three or four years to break into that market,” he says. “We have to persevere and we intend to.” - COMMUNITY Bulictin Board ROBSON RIVER OTTER SWIM CLUB Sunday, April 26, 9:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m., Rob: sor i wimmers please bring photocopy of birth certificate. After a pause, MacDonald laughs, admitting he wasn't always so cocksure.# =! “I know we Canadians have this disease, that we think that anything isti d comes from here else. It was later on, after the company had been going a while, that we realized we were the exception to that rule.” Being the exception meahs MacDonald Dettwiler is a leader in the specialized and competitive business of remote sensing technology. GROWTH STRONG The firm's growth has been nothing short of phenomenal. In 18 years, it has grown from a small group of scientists working part-time to a com) ith employees and offices th Canada, thé Uaitat § Beata, Greek Britain, Switzerland and Malaysia that generated between $55 million and $60 million in revenue last year. At the heart of its success is remote sensing — the science of using a satellite to bounce electromagnetic waves such as radar or infra-red light off the earth's surface. The satellite receives and transmits the resulting image in a “bit stream” of numbers to a ground station on the earth below. That's where MacDonald Dettwiler comes in. It uses the same kind of technology now used in digital recording, but instead of converting numbers into music, the company's hardware translates them into pictures. Among other things, the pictures are used for geological and agricultural surveys. They can even indicate what types of crops are growing in a particular area. SEES POTENTIAL A key reason for the company’s success is that MacDonald — formlery a professor of electrical engineering at the h Institute of Tech ry and the University of British Columbia — realized his best students were leaving British Columbia for jobs in the United States or eastern Canada. By providing a challenging atmosphere, MacDonald and his partner Vern Dettwiler, a computer expert, were able to persuade some of the country’s brightest engineering graduates to stay in Canada. ‘The result was a team that pioneered technology that forms the basis of 15 of the 16 ground stations for the U.S. Landsat series of satellites. But growth has not always come easy. The pal with a ft system it developed in 1979 for Swissair. The system was larger than anything the firm had tried and the project size and management problems that ensued almost sank the company, observers say. COMPANY REBOUNDS But the company quietly settled with Swissair and returned to the area it knew best. In 1983, it developed the world’s first “real time” radar system, which allows pilots and others to see weather systems as they are remotely sensed. But the project of the decade for MacDonald Dettwiler is the Automated Weather Distribution System, which it is developing for the U.S. air force. The $200-million project is being put through the paces in Richmond this month. MacDonald says he hopes his firm is an example to other Canadian companies cracking international markets.
