SELKIRK COLLEGE Coach Sally Willis will take the Saints cross- country running team to Royal Roads Military College in Victoria this weekend for the B.C. Championships. Volleyball Saints try to make the grade Ed Mills SPORTS EDITOR Put in terms a student would understand, the Selkirk College Saints women’s volleyball team has a grade point average some- where in the 1.5 range. Put in terms the rest of us would get, the team, over the last few years, has most closely resem- bled Saddam Hussein’s Iraq — lots of talk but usually bombed out oma the campaign is a month old. While new coach Gord Sookaveiff isn’t expecting to work miracles with the Saints this sea- son, he does have what could be considered lofty goals in mind as the team heads into its first match of the season this weekend at BC- IT in Burnaby. “This weekend is kind of a tell- all as to where we sit,” said Sookaveiff during the team's regu- lar practice session at the college Tuesday night. “But I'dlikethem poke a noes .500 this vile of the road would be a decided improvement for a team that has usually held up the tail end of the 11-school B.C. The Saints are hoping to hoist the trophy representing a record fourth straight provincial championship this year. Talent, potential make record fourth college title a ‘definite possibility, says coach Ed Mills SPORTS EDITOR If you take Mike Perra at face value, you might believe the coach ofthe Selkirk Saints men’s volley- ball team is just going to sit back and watch: as his team wins a record fourth provincial champi- onship this season. “The reason Selkirk College has won the provincial champi- onship three years in a row and could win it again this year has nothing to do with me. All I have Boe is do the right things,” said bagi after he does the right things, he'll go and thank the peo- ple he believes are responsible for the Saints’ success — the volley- ball coaches at L.V. Rogers high school in Nelson, Stanley Humphries secondary school, Mount Sentinel in South Slocan and J. Lloyd Crowe in Trail. “The reason they win champi- onships is because of people like (them),” said Perra. And the way Perra tells it, those schools, which again have produced most of the players on this year’s edition of the Saints, have turned out a crop that has more raw talent and more poten- tial than provincial winners he’s seen in the past as a player and student at the school. Add a couple of top-flight play- ers from Ontario and the Saints are instant contenders again. “Tm not going to make any pre- dictions because I don’t know what the rest of the (competition in the) province is like. But I have confidence that they will outper- from last year’s team by a long shot,” said Perra. “This team already is a lot stronger then that championship team on paper.” Perra takes the team into its first tournament of the season next weekend at Malaspina col- ADVERTISED PRICES IN EFFECT THURS., OCT.
