BOYS BASKETBALL The SHSS junior boys bas- ketball team was upset by Grand Forks in a triple-over- time thriller Saturday for the West Kootenay Champi- onship. The Rockers, who beat Grand Forks in their last three meetings heading into the playoffs, apparently fell victim to over confidence and a hot Grand Forks team in a 56-54 loss. “The boys went out feeling a little overconfident and Grand Forks went into it with nothing to lose, and they came out on top of-us,” said coach Doug Hickey. “I don’t know if it was nerves, jitters, or what,” Hick- ey said. Hickey, who couldn't be at the game in Grand Forks, said his Rockers had more than enough chances to win it, but missed easy shots that kept Grand Forks in the game. “We had a number of chances to put them away and we couldn't do it.” The teams were tied at 48 after regulation time and re- main tied after two, three- minute overtime periods. “S Jack Closkey Todd Bondaroff Ironically, Hickey couldn’t lead his team because he was attending a leadership confer- ence in Vancouver. Senior boys coach John Ritchie filled in. The Rockers advanced to the final by beating Trafalgar Junior Secondary of Nelson 59-42. With 13 points against Trafalgar and 14 against Grand Forks, Todd Bondaroff led the Rockers in scoring in both games. Besides a shade of personal disappointment, Hickey said he feels badly for the Grade 10- players — Rob Machado, Ben Koorbatoff, Mark Perrier, Si- mon Laurie and Bondaroff — who won't have a West Koote- nay Championship under their belts as juniors. “It would have been nice for them to go out on a high note,” Hickey said. “But we had a great year, great kids and very supportive COMMUNITY parents. I’m really happy about it,” he said. SR. GIRLS BASKETBALL Outwardly at least, the SHSS senior girls basketball team is showing no signs of cracking under pressure. A week away from the big show, the team that represents SHSS’s best hope for its first ever provincial championship in senior girls basketball is carrying on business as usual. With just three losses, the Rockettes have been ranked top five in AA in the province all-season. They proved that Thursday and Saturday as they cruised to the West Kootenay Championship with .69-33 and 81-47 wins over an J.L. Crowe of Trail. As they prepare for the provincials, which start March 11 in Prince George, coach Jack Closkey is playing it cool as to the team’s chances. “I think they’re pretty confi- dent, but it’s hard to tell. Ican’t know what they’re thinking, but I'll know when they get there. “So many things go on it’s hard to tell where they’re at. But I think they'll be reason- ably ready,” Closkey said. - Denise Gray said she and the rest of the graduating se- niors on the team — a list that includes Shelly Blessin, Lau- rel Closkey, Kelly Davidoff and Rory Perrier — are more than ready for provincials. - And Gray isn’t as cautious as Closkey about how close she believes the team is tb bringing home the provincial crown. “Extremely close,” said Gray, who, like most of her teammates, will be playing in her third and last basketball provincials for SHSS. “Most of the girls on the team have been playing to- gether since Grade 9, and a lot of us have been friends since Kindergarten. This is our last chance, so you just want to go out there and push as hard as you can to try and get it.” But Gray said that doesn’t mean they'll be pushing too hard and making stupid mis- takes. “I think when the time comes, we'll be confident enough, but not over confi- dent.” The Rockettes meet 15th- ranked Parkland of Victoria in their first game.
