Page 4B The Castlegar Sun Wednesday, November 18, 1992 Shoes, shoes and more shoes, | love shoes. White ones, black ones, red ones, blue ones, | can never have enough shoes. Like many other women, shoes are probably my favourite article of clothing As a base, every woman should have a pair of black and white flats, and a pair of black and white high heels. You'll never get stuck for a pair of shoes if you have these. From there you can expand into colours. For example: You're wearing Stirrup pants white t-shirt and a black blazer. You can go with black flats, with your hair in a simple style and simple makeup you've got a winning combination. Put on a pair of red heels, do your hair up into a jazzy style, with evening makeup you'll look like a million You can also mix colours that you would think otherwise Joan Andrade inappropnate together. Such as Pink blouse, red skirt, and orange shoes, At first you may think it Strange, but remember the colours have to have the same undertones to work well together such as blue undertones or yellow undertones Wearing boots has been fashionable for the past few years. You have cowboy boots, ankle length boots, thigh high boots and the list goes on and on Cowboy boots you can wear with almost everything, Skirts, pants, shorts, dresses etc It's best to wear them with jeans, Great style starts from the ground up Tuc of Fashi however, if you're the adventurous type, you can do anything I find that ankle length boots can only go with pants. Nothing else Thigh high boots, I love thigh high boots. I usually wear them with stirrups pants or tights or maybe even with a mini skirt They're comfortable and if you get arun in your nylons, it’s covered up. You can wear any type of apparel with any type of foot clothing as long as it's tastefully done P.S. This tip is for men. In summer, when you're wearing shorts, don't wear black shoes with black socks. BIG, BIG No- No. Wear sandals for men or sneakers. These people I try to avoid, you know, it could be contagious These days I actually have amazing amounts of energy However, I remember feeling WIPED all the time. This was due to a combination of factors one of which is STRESS Major motivator, let me tell you, boy it gets all kinds of things moving in this body. Most times I internalize stress, and that can be extremely dangerous because it is very subtle. I'm not one to suffer mugranes, ulcers, hives or the like No, I just “flip out”. Or at least, I used to have that tendency. My worst fear was that the men in the ‘little white coats” were going to take me “away”. And we all know what that means, don't we? “Oh, poor soul, I didn't’ realize she was so WEAK MINDED!” This scenario was totally unacceptable to me and I therefore chose to deny the fact that my stress even existed. Oh, I can handle it, just keep smiling and BE STRONG! And yes, it WOULD indeed feel better afterwards, whether it be the food or just the fact that I had survived for at least half the day, I’m not sure Moralizing on the issue of drinking alcohol is not the purpose of this column, rather I simply know that this was not an effective way for me to deal with stress, even though I defended it for some time. I looked around me and observed. Unfortunately, I saw many children growing up in homes where alcohol was the “answer” to every problem. A decision was made at this point in my life to find another way to peace and “fun”. I have learned that the key to my success in this venture is taking care of myself, while still remaining sensitive to others. The first step was to ask myself who in the heck I was doing all these “wonderful deeds” for anyway. Exactly who was I trying so hard to please? I decided that from now on, I was going to be number ONE, the rest of the world was going to have to wait. It’s amazing how I discovered the motivating forces in me. She plays the clarinet in the school concert band and loves sports such as kayaking and hockey. What does she hope to gain while on the AFS program? “A better understanding of a different people's culture.” Jodi will be arriving in Castlegar in January and will attend the local high school for one year. All she needs to make her dream come true is a family to host her. AFS Interculture Canada, the leading international exchange organization in the country, is currently looking for a family in the area to host Jodi. Chemical dependency a major concern in B.C. SUBMITTED. British Columbia leads the rest of Canada and forty American States in the consumption of alcohol per capita. Approximately 80 percent of British Columbia's population consumes alcohol, and over one third of the population uses marijuana. These alarming Statistics are among the reason why the Chemical Dependency Resource Team (CDRT) at Vancouver General Hospital says that chemical dependency is a major health care problem in British Columbia. “Statistically, up to 40 percent of patients admitted to the hospital in both Canada and the U.S. enter in some stage of chemical dependency, and are in the hospital with an illness or injury that is related to their dependency in some way,” pointed out Marelyn Rugg, Clinical Nurse Specialist with the CDRT at VGH. A dependency exists when the use of chemical substances such as alcohol, cocaine, marijuana, prescribed or non-prescribed drugs causes problems in one or more areas of your life such as health, family. Ny , or a legal sit ‘These Startling statistics are reflected in the number of alcohol- related hospital admissions - more than SO percent of emergency admissions in B.C. are alcohol related. “Alcohol is by far the drug of choice among the people we see. Dependency upon it and other drugs crosses all socioeconomic groups,” stated Tom Shenton, Social Worker with Vancouver General Hospital's CDRT. “However, the incidence of people using more than one drug is evident among patients who come to VGH, with an increase in heroin over the past year.” Ann Landers Dear Ann Landers: This is a "thank you" letter to all the telephone operators who must take strange and sometimes abusive calls. My husband, "Sam," has been in a nursing home for six years. He is mentally ill. Sam calls me collect, several times a day. When Tm not in, my answering machine picks up the conversation between Sam and one of those telephone angels. Often TI hear the operator say, "Don't cry, Sam. She'll be back.” Or "I know she'll come to see you soon, Sam.” Last night, I received this call "Hello. Is this number --- ?" "Yes," I replied. The man went on, "I'm the supervisor. A man calling collect is very angry and says he is going to kill you. I replied, "That man is my husband and he's mentally ill. He's in a home and would never hurt me. But I do want to thank you and all the other telephone operators who have been kind.” Please, Ann, let everyone know how wonderful these people are. - M.Z. in Santa Monica Dear M.Z.: You just did and I thank you. Dear Ann Landers: While visiting in Washington, D.C., my wife and I Hospital patients who suffer ,from a chemical dependency may atso face other complication These patients often stay longer than others because of more complex conditions, multi-trauma injuries, delayed wound healing, and restricted family supports and resources. A VGH in 1991 - 92, chemically dependent patients had an average hospital stay of 19.3 days compared to 8.8 for other patients. “Identification of the chemically dependent patient is essential,” emphasized-Marelyn Rugg. Fortunately, health care professionals at VGH = are beginning to receive training from the CDRT in the identification of chemical dependency. As a result, they are able to recognize patients with a chemical dependency and take proper steps to refer them to appropriate resources in the hospital or community. “Although it is very important for people to recognize the extent to which chemical dependency is prevalent in our society, it is even more important for them to realize that in its earlier stages it is one of the most treatable conditions there is. It is just getting staned toward recovery that is difficult,” stressed Tom Shenton. At VGH, 45 percent of chemically dependent patients who have consulted with the Tan Gone to enter ‘community treatment. This may consist of outpatient counselling, support recovery homes, residential treatment, or self-help programs. The Chemical Dependency Resource Team at VGH is a multi- disciplinary group consisting of a Social Worker, Clinical Nurse Specialist, and Physician whose mandate it is to assess, educate, intervene, and counsel patients at VGH who are identified as chemically dependent, and refer them to community resources for treatment. They have received over 1100 referrals since the program began three years ago. Woodland Park Elementary School honoured several students with awards November 2. SUN STAFF PHOTO / Karen Kerkhoff engaged a taxi driver to show us the sights and give us some history of our nation’s capital We passed a statue of a soldier mounted on his horse. The taxi driver asked if we knew the significance of a horse sculpture with all four of the horse's hooves on the ground, compared with one hoof lifted or the horse reared with two hooves off the ground. When we said we didn't, he went on to tell us that four hooves on the ground meant the soldier died a natural death, one lifted meant the soldier was wounded in combat, and the horse reared meant the soldier was killed in battle I've asked several friends about this and no one has ever heard the story.
