request. An additional collection of paperback books will be kept on the lounge floor to be borrowed on the honour system. Other library services will include photocopying facilities, microfilm readers and a student typing room seating six. Students may use their own tape recorders. Assistance from the library staff in finding information will be available at all times. A brochure about the services at the library and the regulations governing its use will be issued to students at the beginning of the academic year. The Language Laboratory The most natural approach to learning a foreign language is through a progression from listening and imitation to conversation — from this stage to reading and thence finally to writing. To aid in this process, the College will have a language laboratory seating twenty-four students and capable also of serving as a steno- graphic laboratory. THE COUNSELLING PROGRAMME Counselling and guidance services help the learner use to the best advantage the opportunities offered by Selkirk College. These services assist the student to improve his self-understanding, his capacity for self-management, and his skills in formu- lating realistic goals. The services available are: educational guidance which includes help with study habits, education handicaps, and selecting appropriate educational goals: vocational and career planning consistent with the student’s abilities and interests; consultation with respect to personal adjustment problems. All students will receive counselling prior to enrolling in the College and through- out their college careers. They will be encouraged to seek individual conferences with qualified counsellors and to participate in the group guidance activities which will develop as the year progresses. In addition to the college counsellors, each faculty member will meet with students on educational matters. This important service supplements the instructional pro- gramme regarding matters which may affect the student’s progress. The counselling service works closely with secondary schools to help prepare students for college careers. Another important source of counselling help for stu- dents comes from the business and community agencies who provide occupational and career information, job opportunities and who work with special cases referred to them by the College. TESTING SERVICES All students on entering the College will be required to take a number of standard- ized tests. These tests aid in educational and vocational planning, measure aptitude for college work, and proficiency in English and reading comprehension. Tests will be interpreted to the student in conference with the counsellor. Other tests which measure achievement, and special aptitudes will also be available to assist the student in self-evaluation and to help him with problems of an educa- tional, personal, or vocational nature. The results of these tests will be discussed with students individually or in groups. 15
