(CP) — The sawmills in Smithers remain open while nervous residents await the outcome of a dispute between two unions that could close the largest mill. The town's two major saw- mills are among a few in B.C, that have not been closed by a forest industry strike, now in its fourth week. Workers at the two mills bargain inde- pendently from other forest workers in the province, But striking International Woodworkers of America members have picketed the largest of the mills, Pacific Inland Resources Ltd., which employs about 250 people. “The mill is a wholly- owned subsidiary of West Fraser Timer,’’ said Toby Nogensen, financial secretary for woodworkers Local 1-424, “We are on strike against West' Fraser and, as such, we have the legal right to picket any of their operations.”” Employees at the mill ate members of the independent Northern: Interior Wood- workers Association. Their contract doesn’t expire until April, 1982, and most mem- bers have crossed the picket lines, “The union and manage- ment both left the decision to cross the picket line up to the invididual workers,’ associa- tion vice-president Gerry Vandergaag said. OSS PICKETS ‘Most of them have crossed the picket lines be- cause they feel the IWA has no right to take away their paycheque,’’ Vandergeag said. “The few who haven't say they don’t want to cross the lines because they have had hassles from the IWA before.’” Mill manager Walt Wick- son has been attempting to obtain an injunction against the pickets because, although mill workers have crossed picket lines, members of oiher unions have refused to o They include log scalers with the provincial forest service and continued loss of their services could eventual- ly force a closure of the mill, A second mill owner, Dick Groot, hopes his operation will not become embroiled in the dispute. About 75 workers at Groot Logging Ltd. belong to the Cristian Labor Associu- tion of Canada, another inde- pendent bargaining group, which will hold contract talks later this month. Meanwhile, the towns business people sit and wait. They say business is good in the town of 6,500.
