SAVE NOW However, Claudia Pierce, a partner with Pannell Kerr Forster accountants in Toronto, recommends RRSPs for almost everyone. She says Canada’s baby boom generation is growing older, which will put an increasing squeeze on the Canada Pension Plan, so it’s a good idea to save for your own retirement. “It's the sort of thing that gets more important with the aging society,” said Pierce. Young people certainly should be investing for their retirment, she said. Here's how an RRSP works. Contributions to an RRSP enable you to build up a fund which can be used to generate regular weekly or monthly payments after you retire. The contributions are tax-deductible, which means you can reduce your current taxes. The interest earned inside an RRSP is also tax-free, which means it grows much faster over 35 years than in non-registered savings. For example, if you invest $1,000 at the beginning of each year in an RRSP you will have $235,125 at the end of 35 they reach age 71. Contributions are limited — because the government does not want people sheltering huge amounts of income in RRSPs —and vary according to whether you are enrolled in an employer pension plan or deferred profit-sharing plan. If you are not enrolled in such plans, you can contribute up to 20 per cent of your earned income to a maximum of $5,500 a year. Earned income is a Revenue Canada term year minus the amount you have contributed to the pension plan. Even if you made no pension contributions, you are still limited to a maximum $3,500. Contributions to an RRSP in both cases must be made RRSP contributions, including short-term interest certi- ficates, Canadian stocks and bonds and Canadian mutual funds. young people who may end up unemployed, back i in school or in full-time parenthood and unwilling to work. You can withdraw part or all of the money in your plan at any time providing you have not chosen a “locked-in” or non-redeemable investment. But be prepared for a tax shock. The amount of the withdrawal will be taxable as income in the year received.
