TORONTO (CP) — As the isco fashion pendulum completes its swing for this year, the mood for fall can be summed up in one word: luxurious. Lavish is lovely and classic elegance is back in style. Top among the trends are the shorter hemline, tailored jac- kets and stretch fabrics that shape the body. Fall's big color is brown, but black, navy and grey are still strong, especially mixed with winter white, low-inten- sity pastels or red, Here's how a cross-section of Canada’s top designers see Fall 1967: Clotheslines: Husband and wife duo Bernard McGee and Shelly Wickabrod, known for their “perfect” trenchcoat, have ineluded both long and short lengths in their collection. “The short's obviously more fashionable, but the long we offer as an option,” though the trendsetters are METAL walking cone by Century 21 Building. The national Centres for Disease Control warned earlier this year that hea’ resistant to penicillin treatment rose 90 per cent in the United States last year, ‘with more than 10,000 cases reported in New York, Florida and Los Angeles alone. The centres re Thursday that’ the Denver Metro Health Clinic found 40’ cases of infection with penicillin-resistant strains of the sexually transmitted disease last year; that was up dramatically from the yarly average of two cases in the preceding five years. The Denver Metro Health Clinic treats more than half..of the reported gonorrhea cases in the city and Denver County, so scientists believe trends there are indicative of trends in the Denver metro area. “Although the inci of ie esistant gonorrhea) has been concentrated in New York, California and Florida, outbreaks in other parts of the country are occurring frequently,” the centres said in its weekly report. Denver's 40 cases occurred in 39 people, one of whom apparently became re-infected, the report said. Thirty-two patients were interviewed and identified a total of 76 sexual partners. Forty-nine of those partners then were tested, and 14 of them also had signs of penicillin-resistant gonorrhea. Tests of the Denver patients showed some differences in their gonorrhea strains, which “strongly suggest that this outbreak is, in reality, a series of ‘mini-outbreaks’ caused by different strains,” the centres The Atlanta-based centres recommends that gonorr- hea patients be tested for the penicillin-resistant strain, and that in areas where that strain accounts for more than one per cent of all cases, doctors use other drugs, such as ceftriaxone, for treating the disease. Ceftriaxone and other newer anti-gonorrhea drugs are several times more expensive than penicillin. hea is one of the more common sexually itted diseases. h believe that between two million and three million cases occur in the United States each year. Penicillin-resistant gonorrhea, if not properly treated, can lead to serious complications, including pelvic inflammatory disease in women. OPPORTUNITY GRAND FORKS, B.C.
