21,1991 Straight talking Chernoff is back on the field News Staff In her 24 years as coach of Stanley Humphries secondary school’s two field hockey teams, Verna Chernoff’s seen more smil- ing, eager young faces than McDonald. And this year is no different for the veteran coach as she takes a nucleus of returning players and begins the rebuilding process for the senior team while starting fresh again with the junior team. A year after taking her senior girls to a third-place finish in the provincials, which Castlegar host- od, Chernoff has a mostly new crew of seniors this season. She got her first look at them Tuesday in Trail where they played to a scoreless tie with the girls from J. Lloyd Crowe. “The forwards were alittle bet- ter than I expected and our de- fence, we're in the process of try- ing new people, so they'll come along,” said Chernoff. Beyond picking out some things that will need work, Cher- noff also made some firm deci- sions about who will fill which roles on the team. “Denise Grey will be captain this year. She played a strong leadership role with the younger girls (in the Trail game),” she said. On offence Chernoff said re- turning players Kelly Davidoff and Laurel Closkey were both showing good early season form around the net, despite the score- less outcome. As for the junior team, Cher- noff said the prospects are there but many of the players are pick- ing up sticks for the first time, so it will take some time before they come together. The junior team was cut down to 18 players last week and more may be cut after the team’s first game. Or maybe not. “We usually keep 15, but be- cause a lot the kids have never played before, we want to give them all a chance. It’s hardly fair Red Mountain has surprise for skiers Verna Chernoff: to cut them when they've never played before. You don't like to do that.” The senior girls will host a sev- en-team tournament starting Fri- day and continuing through Sat- urday at SHSS and Kinnaird.
