Stoushnow is the manager of West’s Travel Agency, something she has done since 1987. Prior to that, she was a travel agent for 31 years. In a business where money plays a significant role, says that foreign’currency can dic- tate who goes where. “It makes a difference,” she said, adding that the relative weakness of the Mexican peso boosted travel to Mexico in recent years. Stoushnow says that the travel business is changing constantly, and one of the major changes to happen is automation. Until 1989, travel agents at Harcourt promotes province first West’s would work manually when booking tickets for clients, a time- consuming process. Now, through the use of com- puters, tickets can be processed and printed out in a matter of min- utes. Stoushnow says that some trav- elers have a misnomer about trav- el agencies, that it’s cheaper to book a major plane trip through an airline. She says that booking plane tickets, hotels, car rentals and more are all part of an agent’s job. “It’s really advantageous to talk to a travel agent,” she said, “You can have the entire holiday pack- age tied togethér, and we don’t charge for our service.” As well, Stoushnow says that travelers believe that to fly in and out of Spokane requires an Amer- ican agent. “It’s not true,” she said, adding that West’s can take care of the bookings, all without the GST. At this time last year, the Gulf War was reality and fears of ter- rorism prevented a lot of people from travelling. ow said that these fears were felt as far away as Castlegar. “People postponed vacations,” she said, “They were reluctant to goto Europe.” With the war now a memory, airlines now have another prob- lem to confront: the economy. Stoushnow says the effects of the economy can be felt here in the Kootenays. “Westar is a perfect example,” she said, “So is Cominco.” “People are cutting back.” The major carriers recognize their airplanes are half-empty, so to fill those planes seat-sales are put together. “There’s only so many seats sold on an aircraft at the lower price,” Stoushnow said, “People wait for it.” And with the coveted traveller dollar to compete for, Stoushnow said the major carriers are making Vi Stoushnow shows off the tickets to vacation Paradise at Castlegar’s West's Travel Agency. News photo by Jonathan Green more and more concessions. “The airlines are bending rules,” she said, “They’re trying to fill up their planes, so they're being a little more flexible.” “They didn’t use to do that.” Travel agencies are regulated by the International Air Transport Association, but Stoushnow says it doesn’t automatically allow them to arrange travel with every carrier. “Each carrier has to authorize us to sell their airline,” she said. And with airlines flying world- wide, Stoushnow says the travel agent should know something about where the client wants to go. “The more experience the trav- el agent has in travelling, the more oy can offer to their client,” she ae if you’re looking for someone to tell you where to go, try West’s Travel Agency.
