wildlife killed or wounded as
a result of their activities,
says the B.C. Wildlife Feder-
ation.

convention that poachers
should pay a compulsory re-
imbursement fine to help off-
set the loss of fish and
wildlife resulting from illegal
hunting and fishing.

This year alone, the fund
will finance 105 fish, wildlife
and habitat related projects

has financed 900 such pro-
jects with a total value of
more than $17 million.

Delegates felt the fines
would be more than justified,
given that similar reim-
bursement is mandatory for
those convicted of illegally
killing domestic animals.
The new fines should be in
addition to — not replace —
fines levied for the offence,
delegates decided. ;

And any money generated
as a result should not go to
general revenue; but be paid
directly into the Habitat Con-
servation Fund, according to
the BCWF delegates.

HCF budget could increase
dramatically. The BCWF
pegged suggested fines of
$2,500 for any endangered
species, $2,000 for grizzly
bears and $1,000 for most big
game species.

Wildlife Branch director,
Ray Haliday said during the
convention that poaching is
on the increase across the
province, especially by pro-
fessional poachers trading in
the illegal market for animal
parts.

Environment Minister
John Cashore addressed the
problem by saying 15 new
conservation officers would
be hired and a new covert-op-
erations section formed to
help combat poaching.
