Saturday, August 29, 1992 m Good mechanic an imp The following is advice provided by the British Co- lumbia Automobile Association. Finding a good mechanic can be avery costly and frustrating experience for most of us. Unfortunate- ly, in order to be able to recognize a good mechanic, we would have had several experiences with bad ones. A most reliable way of finding a good mechanic re- quires a lot of work on the part of the consumer. Since the average consumer seldom comes into direct con- tact with a mechanic, it is the repair facility itself which needs to be checked out. The following are some tips which should be considered when looking for a mechanic with whom to trust your vehicle and bankroll. 1. Location — The repair facility you choose should be conveniently located; 2. Housekeeping — The repair facility should be reasonably clean and tidy, with good lighting; 3. Qualifications — The repair facility should em- ploy mechanics who have completed a formal ap- =] = Yo) prenticeship and are licenced by the province; 4. Estimates — The repair facility should be will- ing to give you an estimate on the cost of repairs for parts plus labor prior to starting any repairs; 5. Return of Replaced Parts — The repair facil- ity should be willing to show you and make available to you all parts which need to be replaced. Note: some components can be re-manufactured and may not be given to a customer to take away unless the con- sumer is willing to pay a core charge; 6. Hourly Rate — Most repair facilities use one of two available flat rate manuals, Chiltons or Mitchell for establishing a charge-out time for each repair function. Therefore, the hourly rate is the one which will make a difference. This rate will fluctuate from a low of $40 per hour to a high of $70 per hour; 7. Guarantee — A good repair faciliity will provide a guarantee for a minimum of 90 days or 6,500 km. whichever occurs first. Some guarantees extend for longer periods depending on the part manufacturer’s guarantee; — \ ortant find 8. Advertising —Be careful of ads which offer ser- vice specials at a much reduced price from the nromal price. Remember, cheap is not always the best. Every- one in business operates on a profit margin and no one can operate at a loss for very long; 9. Reputation — Check a prospective repair facil- ity’s reputation by getting information from either the Better Business Bureau or the Automotive Re- tailers Association (ARA) or any other affilliated source. BCAA has an Approved Auto Repair Service Pro- gram with over 350 repair facilites in the member- ship. All the facilities which are approved by BCAA have been carfully checked out for the criteria men- tioned above. BCAA goes even one step further to ensure that all the approved shops are reputable and provide a high level of service. A random sampling of each repair fa- cility’s customer file is taken for the purpose of sur- veying customer satisfaction. Repair shops with a poor customer reputation are not accepted into this program.
