Nelson forest service tests sc NELSON — The annual talent hunt for potential sealers got underway this month in the Nelson forest region with the ataging of elasses leading to licenced scaler examinations, The forest service program has been introduced in Mid- way, Salmo, Golden, Cran- brook, and Revelstoke where student scalera learn all about the art of measuring and calculating volumes of timber. It's a four day grind packed with lectures, audio visual aids, text assignments and on the job training led by regional scaling co-ordinator Harold Hark. The course winds up with an examination testing know- ledge of the forest act and sealing procedures that aren't easy to master. Tom Bayer has been doing it since 1957 and he agrees the course stumper is know- ing how to identify species. scaler stick used te measure i aS. ci P r rd ry tho radius of a log and a tape to measure the length.
