Repo hursday, January 27, 1972 Woman Premier! Is She Coming! By James K. Nesbitt e Speech from the by tbrons didn’t say anything, the bom ‘threat did not ma- terialize, the rains poured down, the soldiers clicked their heels, the ty liphts were horrendous, the lad- les’ hats were fascinating, a citizen named Bennett look- ed like a well-preserved 50, there were sombre proces- sions as a handsome citizen by name of Nicholson and a severe-looking citizen by walked ‘day of ion ihe all fuss and money, all quite useless, but. everyone who's invited has a good time, citizen Bennett has the best of all. He knows hae shines, ‘and that’s what he likes to a I must say he ry well, There's one thing about our Fremicr, — you always know - when he’s around. That citizen named Ni- cholson read The Speech from the Throne, not seem- jo be “the least bit him see well. He had so many cops around that the bomb, if there was ones didn't go ‘Women's lib was there ia sul force, what with five MLA's, ft : only that our elected When, oh, "when, will we have a lad: Fromlert J ge concertin, one of lace at certain moments. ‘he men are always em! rassed, but never the lady janilors. It wasn’t so bad during last winter and spring, be- cause most of the construc- tion was outside: brick piling and steel! work. In fact, it was quite lively, es- pecially in the spring, with the Italian workers ogting, the girls through the win- dows and being ogled back, and drinking beer on the job, and yelling and laugh- ing. Pout during the summer, the termites, the inside workers, got into the mau- soleum and the result, for a while at least, is complete chaos. The termites are the elec- tricians, plumbers, floor and ceiling men and others of that ilk. If you aren’t trip- ping over an electric cable or walking through some fresh-poured concrete, you're liable to be showered with. sparks -by a+ welder working overhead, The library isn't ready, there is no cafeteria, and the gym is not finished. These are pretty important areas in a school that size. Did you ever try to teach * poetry with a jackhammer blasting a few feet away? It’s like trying to have an elegant garden party in the dlc of a monsoon. oH you ever try to teach anything in a room that has one naked Jight bulb at the back and is so full ‘of some- body else’s junk (equip- ment), that you couldn’t see your students even if you had lights? = Just to compound the confusion, the numbers of all the rooms have been changed. Thus, my old room, 269, is now E202 or 204, I'm. still not sure which. Time was, when a little _grade-niner would ask, “‘Sir, can you tell me where Mr. Jacklin’s room is." 1 would answer with sublime con: fidence, “Sure. Just along the hall to the boiler room, turn right, and it’s about three doors down on your left.” Now, I haven't a clue where Mr. Jacklin’s room is, 1 think he's moved some- where, and the place is so big 1 couldn't tell the kid how ti to get there if 1 did ow. “tt took me half an hour to find the new staff “lounge”, which turned out to be a square, bleak, under- ground hole with no win- dows and a couple of light bulbs hanging from the ceil- ing. In the proposed cafe- torium (a bastard word af there ever was one), windows were sealed off be. cause it would be air-condi- tioned, Then it was learned that it wouldn't be ae conditioned, Can imagine what it will be Tike in there with the smells of cooking and five hundred bodies, on a hot day. - It seems to me that school architects are in a class by themseives, like car- penters who would never tackle anything bigger than an out-door privy, Perhaps I wrong them. Perhaps they are hampered iby id bud- gets. But I can’t imagine any firm that specializes in de- signing. schools being asked zbuild something that:. combined aesthetics and utility. e However, there’s always a bright side to things. The public address system is not working, The bells are not working. These are. two boons, and I hope they never get them working. _ None of the teachers has gone stir-crazy yet, despite the architect’s fetish for windowless rooms. In fact, there’s a-certain gaiety and esprit de corps among the staff, the sort of thing that always emerges in a great disaster, like a bombing blitz or a paralyzing bliz- zard. And the kids love it. Kids love confusion, especially in their teens, when they begin to resent bitterly regula- tions, rules and rigidity. They can wander through the ruins, pretend they got lost, chat with the workmen, and be late for class, That's living.
