A few days later in Trail at
a Social Credit rally, party
leader Bennett promised to
endeavor to get the men back
to work if voted into power,
but, according to a Canadian
Cellulose spokesman to his
knowledge there has been no
communication between the
company and the government.

Gordon MacLachlin, presi-
dent of CanCel's interior lum-
ber operations has stated that
although the company has some
logs “in balance,” the lumber
market is pretty much as it was
when the lay-offs occurred.

He said he was sure gov-
ernment representatives had
been in communication with the

the talks were unknown to him.

“There has probably been
some discussion,” he said, “but
it has not filtered down to my
level.”

conversations that as a govern-
ment body, the regional district
“had been at the back of the
hall." But with the change in
government, “we're going to
try to get first in line.”

Chairman J. P, Moran said
while he agreed with the
motion, directors should wait
for the newly-elected govern-
ment to get its feet on the
ground before approaching
them with specific local prob-

He noted the Union of B.C.
Municipalities is meeting with
Municipal Affairs Minister

why these bills, which are
normally out before year’s end,
have not yet appeared,

council meeting, explained that
no new billing can be intro-
duced to the accounting ma-
chine without extra trouble
until it completes the business
of 1975.
City clerk Rick Beauchamp
said some water bills had gone
out to residents that day in the
north section of town.

given Eaton's employees yes-
terday in a statement from the
president.

It is estimated that the
phase-out will occur about the
end of May.

In a statement to its
employees the president stated
the decision to discontinue
catalogue operations was made
with greatest reluctancy and
only alter it had become clear
that there was no practical
alternative. In 1974 alone, net
operation losses exceeded $17
million.

“The company cannot ccn-
tinue to sustain losses of this
magnitude without risk to its
principal business, department
stores, and the jobs of more
than 40,000 employees.
