A file LEGION BINGO 7 p.m. Every Thursday Legion Hall _ was set up to make all correspondence, minutes, docu- ments etc. available to all concerned, I met four times with the complainants whoalso met with the chairman of the dog control committee and a thorough investigation was carried out, Information was requested and received from the execu- tive of the SPCA in Vancouver regarding approved methods of destroying | dogs. A | special meeting was held in the council ‘chambers with council mem- bers,- complainants and mem- bers of the’ Nelson SPCA ‘in attendance with a free and full discussion, taking place. i * The ‘city “clerk “was -in-> structed to contact the local veterinarian service to ascer- tain the availability and costs of euthenasia by a veterinarian. From all this certain facts emerged. The unfortunate inci- dent at the garbage dump did not involve impounded dogs or the city's dog control function. The SPCA provincial exec- utive approve three methods of dog destrtiction: shooting with a .22 calibre rifle, captive bolt gun, and injection of a lethal substance in a vein, The Nelson chapter of the SPCA object to our use of a gun, preferring the needle in the hands of a veterinarian. We have had no informa- tion to date in response to our inquiry as to the availability of veterinary ‘i'service and’: the costs, but our, study indicates thata sharp increase in the dog Kiwanians Seeking ems For May 29 Auction Sale The date for the annual Kiwanis Auction has been set for May 29. — This was announced this week by. Ros- licence fee would be necessary to cover the increased’ costs. Therefore; the council voted to stay with its present method which we are satisfied is being competently carried out. To those people who have expressed their concern in a decent and civil manner, let me say that .we appreciate their viewpoints and have not closed our minds to anything that might improve what is a. distasteful. but necessary ser- vice. To J. A, Charters I would respond that if his professed compassion ‘was matched ‘by a desire to be fair he would have triedito tearn the facts before leaping at the chance to inflame public opinion considered prose, If those’ “responsible and compassionate citizens” that he lauds in the last paragraph of his letter who are creating the false impression that council is refusing to make use of a humane and acceptable method wf dog destruction that’ is available we would be happy to hear their proposal, : We would also welcome - the formation of a chapter of the SPCA in Castlegar. + Most dog owners are good citizens and create no prob- lems. Problems are created by the irresponsibility minority who allow their dogs to become a nuisance, Plus the few who are so lacking in principle that they evade paying for dog licences, thereby leaving their share of the.costs of dog coritrol to be borne by the more honest citizens.
