Voykin submitted : a strong and impressive col- lection of data on the subject of vital ii to most Symposium speaker ee Critical of authorities ber 13, 1979, page 2, in which there was a detailed report of the cross-examination of Sgt, Doukhobors, but mainly to members of the USCC, to the joint Doukhobor Research Committee at its 68rd con- secutive session Nov. 1 at the Castlogte Community Com- plex. Voykin, a local tradesman, respected choir leader and staunch member of the USCC had been looking forward for a long time to the oppor- tunity to make his presen- tation. He was anxious to go on record before the sym- posium winds up its research with evidence he had col- lected relating to the har- assment, damage and provo- cation to the USCC, especi- ally to its honorary chairman, J.J. Verigin, by seme of the Sons of Freedom group, The occasion that trig- gered Voykin's report was the false accusation, arrest and subsequent trial of J.J. Verigin in 1979, which Voy- kin attended every day. He monitored the evidence of Crown witnesses most care- fully, assessing the evidence they put forth in the light of reality as it showed itself before, during and after the E trial proceedings. Voykin — referring to those Freedomite witnesses who confessed to the fire- bombing of the Grand Forks cooperative store, housing also the library and offices of the USCC (including ISKRA publication), and who also destroyed the USCC Com- munity Centre near the same city — cited the strenuous efforts of these witnesses to implicate Verigin in the web of their work. He pointed out the fact that having caused up to $1 million worth of damage and destruction to USCC prop- erty, not a single one of the “firebugs” spent a day in jail. And how did that happen? Voykin bluntly stated that police who investigated were in accord with the fanatics in” 742! their drive to lay the blame at Verigin's door-step. The audience listened closely as Voykin read ex- cerpts from the Nelson Daily News of Tuesday, . The official newspaper People’s Daily published new regulations obliging acrobats to register with the police and threatening them with especially severe punishment if they buy and sell children. The paper said there is widespread public disquiet at the fact that some troupes use children as young as seven or eight. Some of the acrobats spec- ialize in such bizarre prac- tices as swallowing nails ad then making them come out of their noses, as well as lying on veds of nails and Juggling. Tetrault in the course of his investigation never asked to speak with John Verigin or to any other member of the USCC before arresting Verigin, that a fair amount of the information (used as basis for Verigin’s arrest) emanated from Kres- tova, from Sorokin's assis- tants; and that Tetrault ad- mitted to having said at the preliminary hearing of the case (ina conversation with a Freedomite at Gilpin) — the words: “If I had my way, there'd be one person paying for these crimes.” Asked by Rankin if he had Verigin in mind, Tetrault’s reply was: “That's who I had in mind!” Voykin stressed his con- clusion that the foregoing evidence revealed unques- tionably whose the realized the futility of his endeavours and of necessity had. to change his course, “Every seed needs it own time to mature,” he phil- tive acts to‘him by his Freedomite accusers. Konkin explained about what he called the “total plen” which called for a land-based project of low- rental housing with built-in facilities for arts and crafts that would make the units self-sufficient as much as possible. He went on to stress the of the evidence that showed the statements of the Freedomites containing the accusations against Verigin were counter-signed by wit- nesses Makortoff and Lapshi- noff — both close aides of Sorokin. Voykin continued to show how the USCC appealed many times to administrative authorities to get hold of the situation, but nothing ever happened. When the KCIR (Kootenay Committee on Inter-group Relations) was established, it was asked to bring respon- sible parties known to be active in the Freedomite sec- tion at one time or another for questioning (he named Sorokin, Lebedoff, Kolesni- koff, Mojelsky, Bayoff, Poz- dnikoff). But this too, he said, . Voyki- said ‘the KCIR never raised its voice against the destructive campaign that the Freedomites direc- ted against the USCC. Lat- terly, he said, this committee wished to side-step the main issue and directs its attention toward establishing the true parentage of a young Free- domite extremist Olga Hoodi- coff known for her erratic behavior in Gilpin and Kres- tova.
