The main reason is not be- cause they are hungry, but rather because they are not as emotionally as happy as they'd like to be, according to Helen Klassen member ser- vices coordinator for Weight Watchers of B.C. Weight Watchers has in- troduced a Self Discovery Plan aimed at examining why people eat and why they want to lose weight. Klassen says emotions play a major role in why people tend to eat. “The Self Discovery Plan was desjgned in response to research showing that our behavior directly affects our weight control and that moods and emotions are the major cause of weight gain,” Klassen told the Castlegar News in a recent interview. She adds that the program helps people recognize “prob- lem foods” and helps them to recognize that “they can handle the challenges and make changes for permanent weight loss. “We're helping members discover what kinds of eating styles they have, what kinds of foods to avoid and these are two critical points for weight loss success.” Klassen added that people have to learn why they eat and why they want to lose weight in order to keep weight off. She adds that emotions play a large part in why people eat and that the prac- tice of eating while being emotionally “down” can stem from childhood. “Perhaps when we were little we hurt our knee and were given a cookie and to- day that comes to life in feel- ing sad and feeling hurt, and I think, ‘I'll have something to make me feel better’ and Robson is the place to be this week. There will be a Strawberry Tea on Thurs- day, June 18 from 2-4 p.m. and on Sunday there will be a spaghetti supper from 4;30-7 p-m. Tickets for the dinner are adults $6, children under 12 $3. Both activities take place at the Community Hall and everyone is welcome to attend. So come and enjoy. T.R.
