Less than a month after my move to the valley last fall, I called Colleen to arrange a long- awaited meeting. She was working in Ottawa, as legislative assistant to Jim Fulton (MP for Skeena and the NDP environment critic), but Environmental Achievement, could meet me over the Chri holid and that her ca igns had escalated from the local and regional (Valhalla Park, South Moresby) to the national (saving the boreal forests from pulp mills). As her sister Kathy says, she had become a “minister of the environment.” When I saw Colleen a year ago on the porch of her house, I phoned a couple times from Calgary (where I was spending Christmas) to make arrange- ments. “Guess what I’m doing?” she said. Thad no idea, but figured it was related to the environment. “I’m curled up on the couch, OPEN DAIL D.sar-D DINING LOUNGE * LICENCED * 365-3294 seaialesememenerinee YAT4P.M. reading a novel,” she exclaimed, sounding like someone who was watching her first snowfall. Silverton was socked in, and Colleen was hunkered down under a quilt, blissful to be qui- etly alone. I asked when it would be-OK — to visit. “As long as it’s not-on my. birthday,” she said. She turned 41 on Jan. 5. Before wishing me a Happy New Year, she told me she was concerned about war breaking out in the Persian Gulf. “Tm praying for peace in the world,” she said. I arrived on Jan. 3, with a sleeping bag, notebook ahd tape recorder, my nerves longing for Peace in my own home. Abandoning professional decorum, I poured out my pathetic story: frozen water lines, melting snow on the wood- stove, scrambling to keep warm — in short, life was hell. Colleen laughed and instinc- FR tively hugged me. “You're earning lots of pio- neer points,” she said. “Why don’t you stay here? I'll be in Ottawa until the end of May.” I hadn’t been hinting, but with that simple, generous offer, our of- six weeks were history. I accepted, and from Jan. 8 to June 8, lived happily ever after with my part- ner in Colleen McCrory’s house. It’s an experience that fills me with gratitude. T'm grateful for every morn- ing we woke up to the glory of the unlogged Valhallas, to which Colleen dedicated a decade of her life. I'm thankful for the care and support we received, much of it from her friends and rela- tives. “One of Colleen’s gifts,” says her sister Kathy, “is that she is very perceptive to people’s needs.” Thank you, Colleen, for #0 many gifts — and for rescuing us! Moyie National Historic Site at Kaslo will officially open June 30 at 2 p.m. The 93-year-old Kootenay Lake sternwheeler, berthed on the shore of Kaslo Bay, 70 kilo- metres northeast of Nelson, has undergone extensive preserva- tion work over the past two rs. new centre, built at street level, permits visitors to enter the ship by a ramp and simulated pier, making visits by those in wheelchairs possible. The centre was completed as part of a $250,000 grant from the B.C. Heritage Trust. Scale models of almost all the sternwheelers and steam tugs that plied Kootenay Lake are on display in the foyer of the cen- tre, all of them built by Bert Learmonth of Six Mile, a lake- side community east of Nelson. In the lower level of the cen- tre is a scale model of the Kaslo Bay operations of the Kaslo and Slocan Railway, a narrow-gauge line opened from Kaslo to the mining boom town of Sandon in 1895. The model, painstakingly built by William Moon, a watch- maker from Sarnia, Ont., was it out to Kaslo in May by its builder, a fan of narrow- gauge railways. He built the model in sections and rented a truck at his own expense to make sure the layout arrived in sound condition. The ship will be open to the public free of charge after 2 p.m. on opening day. Coffee, and other refreshments will be served. Introducing the guests will be Jack Morris, a former mayor of Kaslo and a prime mover in sav- ing the ship when the Canadian Pacific Railway withdrew her from service in 1957, the Koote- nay Lake Historical Society says in a news release. Kaslo bought the Moyie from the CPR for $1 that year. Morris will conduct the official party around the ship, accompanied by project manager Ken Butler and foreman. Dan Pasemko, to explain details of the work before the opening ceremonies. The official party will include representatives from B.C. Her- itage Trust, the Royal B.C, Museum, the Canadian Parks Service and West Kootenay politicians. ___IN MEMORY ness. She was 65.
