The group is developing a nications strategy for public information on packag- ing issues, and is reviewing Ju- risdictional authority and ex- isting legislation on packaging throughout the country. The New packa eS Recycling and You See) ee same group has also developed recommended packaging poli- cies, as follows: 1. All packaging in Canada should have minimal environ- mental affects. 2. Priority will be given to the management of packaging in the following order; source reduction, re-use, then recy- cling. : 3. An ongoing campaign of information will be conducted to make Canadians aware of the functional and environ- mental impacts of packaging. 4. All policies will apply to ge protocol irection all packaging used in Canada, including imported packaging. 5. Regulations will be imple- mented to achieve compliance with stated policies. a) 6. All government policies and practices with respect to packaging will be consistent with recommended policies. Recent additional agenda items include a review of gov- ernment policies and practices which impede the achievement of the protocol; development of industry packaging action plans; develop of secondary content standards for packag- ing; research and development priority reviews, and educa- tional programs for use. in schools. Clearly, the scope of the Na- tional Packaging Protocol plan is very wide ranging. Even if only a portion of the recom- mended policies and actions are successfully implemented, they may permanently change the way the nation produces, uses, recycles, disposes and fundamentally thinks about packaging. —_—_|f There's something ! 365-7266 | ——— Genuine Mazda Parts & Accessories Specialized Maria Service 713-17th St., Castlegar DL. 7956 CALL NOW COLLECT 365-7241 MAZDA— IT JUST FEELS RIGHT!
