COVERT GETS THE PRIZE His Apple Exhibit at the Spokane Fruit Fair— The Big Ranch. W. H. Covert, whose big ranch near Grand Forks 1s one of the at- tractions of the Boundary country, returned this morning from Spo- kane, where he received first prize for his exhibit of apples. He also has an exhibit of twenty varieties at the Paris exposition. After sixteen years ef continuous labor, the ‘‘paystreak,” so to speak, has been struck on this ranch, and it is a question between. the values of mining and agriculture. Of the 320 acres which comprise his prop- erty, Mr. Covert has 140 under cul- tivation. Apples are his hobby, and he now has 11,000 apples trees, of which 2000 are beating, . He is satisied that there is far more money in apples, than in wheat and just. by way of comparison, he took fram one. Ben Davis -tree last year, $60 worth of apples. Allowing 25 feet square for an apple tree and es- timating a bushel of wheat, which is..a.fair average for a piece: of ground that size, would give $60 for a bushel of wheat. His apples bring five cents a pound as against three and a half and four cents for those shipped in, and he cannot supply the demard. One peach plum tree netted him $30, and from an acre of berries this season he took $600. Covert’s corn brings 65 to 75 cents dozen, and all his produce is in demand at proportion- ate prices, He hus a thousand prunes trees all bearing, and about 20 hands are employed on the evap- orator. . Pretty soon he expects to be supplying the Rossland markets. Mr. Covert is a member o1 the Spokane Fruit Growers’ association and endeavored to induce the Board of Trade in the Boundary district to place at the exposition a generat ex- hibit from all the ranches, in con- nection with a mineral exhibit from the surrounding camps. They were too slow about it, however, so Mr. Covert went it alone and has been rewarded, not only with a prize, but by general admiration of his exhibit. It simply indicates what could have been done for the Boundary district, had all displayed half the energy that the big rancher did. | Keaterday’s Nominations, . (By Associated Press.)
