Tel's call management service will help reduce nuisance calls KAREN KERKHOFF Sun staff If you have ever been the victim of a harassing or obscene phone call you know how frustrating and frighten ing those calls can be As of July ,23, 1993 B.C Telephone will be offering a service which, while new to Castlegar, is not unfamiliar to other parts of Canada. The ser- vice which is known as Call Management Service (CMS), will decrease nuisance phone calls by as much as 35 per cent Ed Clark, Communications Manager for B.C. Telephone Interior Region, said the ser vice, which has-been tried in other cities, such as Vancouver, Kelowna, Calgary, Toronto, and Edmonton, has been well received and has helped reduce the cost and amount of nui sance calls. ‘The service has decreased those kind of calls by. about 35 per cent. Obscene and harass- ing phone-cails are very expen- Sive for us. Call display will greatly assist in reducing those type of calls.” While subscription to CMS 1s optional, one of the options, call display, will affect even those customers who choose not to subscribe to the service Call display will show the tele- phone number of the individual who is placing the phone call, an advantage Clark has likened to a door peephole “This feature is just like a peephole in the door as call display lets you see who is calling before you answer the Phone. This will certainly reduce obscene and nuisance Phone calls as well as tele phone solicitation.” Besides call display, the Service will also offer call again, which will automatical ly redial the last outgoing call; Call return, which will store and return the last incoming call, “and call screen, which will route unwanted calls to a recorded announcement which Says the receiving party is not accepting calls For customers who don’t appreciate that their phone number will be displayed to others, the Canadian Radio- television and Telecommuni- cations Commission (CRTC) has approved three options The first option is per-call blocking, which will be pro: Vallican customers to vote on one-way area phone service Submitted Telephone customers in Valli- can next month will be asked by BC TEL to vote on a proposal which would give them one-way Extended Area Service (EAS) to Castlegar About 687 subscribers in the Vallican exchange (226) have been mailed ballots. The voting period will take place between April | - 30. Ed Clark, Communications Manager, said that by paying more for their basic monthly ser vice, Vallican residents would be able to call Castlegar (365) with out paying. long distance charges. He said Castlegar customers are not affected by this proposal and they would continue to pay long distance charges tor calls to Valli can One-way EAS is intended to meet the telephone needs of peo ple in communitic frequent Communication with a nearby exchange,” Clark said. He stated that Vallican to Castlegar is who require eligible because it meets the dis- tance and calling frequency crite- ria that were approved by BC TEL’s regulator, the Canadian Radio-television and Telecom- munications Commission (CRTC). The one-way EAS program has been developed in co-opera- toh with the Company's regula- tor and requires the CRTC’s approval. Vallican residents have been informed about the voting pro- cess in a pre-plebiscite letter mailed from BC TEL on March 12, 1993 Clark said that if the majority (50% plus one) of Vallican tele- Phone customers who vote are in favour of this proposal, BC TEL plans to introduce the service in the spring of 1994, subject to approval by the CRTC “Time is needed to allow for the engineering and installation of additional cable and switching equipment,” he pointed out. “The in-service date may be subject to change.” If Vallican votes in favour of Time Air and Ontario Express to merge Submitted Effective April, 1993 Time Air and Ontario Express Ltd. joined operations and are now called Canadian Regional Airlines. la partner with Canadian Airlines International and upon completion of the merger, Canadian Regional will serve over 70 destinations across Canada and the US while employing nearly 2,000 people — including the staff at the Castle- gar Airport Enjoy your ce “AIRY QUEEN INTRODUCES SUPER SUNDAE SUNDAY April 25 introducing our smoke free environment ALL DQ SUNDAES 7 PRICE on SUPER SUNDAE SUNDAY t 8 © in our < brazier SMOKE FREE ENVIRONMENT the service, then the basic monthly exchange rate for an individual residential customer would increase to $9.75 from the current $9.15; individual busi- ness line customers would pay $29.30, an increase of $3.10 from the current rate of $26.20. The rate structure is based on long-term costs of providing EAS. The increased exchange rates associated with EAS reflect the fact that Vallican telephone cus- tomers would have access with out paying-tong distance charges to more than 5800 additional subscribers in Castlegar. Because the program involves an increase in rates, Clark urges customers-to participate in the plebiscite process in order that the Company may provide the CRTC with the community's clear opinion of the EAS propos- al The ballots will be returned in a sealed envelope and will be counted by BC TEL and a repre sentative from the Central Koote- nay Regional District LECTROLUX HI TECH 2100 April Special $499 611 Columbia Ave. '5-0828 Sherri, Rick, Kathy, Sandra, Scott, Crystal, Trudy & Shirley to Lynda Hanley and Heather Sigsworth for their excellent work at the West Kootenay Hairdressers Competition A pril 3, 1993.
