Knapweed is on the rise in local ized areas throughout B.C., and unfortunately ours is one of them Knapweed is a highly competi: tive plant which is taking over our grasslands and open areas. In the winter these areas provide animals, such as deer and big horned sheep, with the bulk of their food. These animals do not eat knap weed. As knapweed takes over they have ‘less food available to make it through the already harsh wuiter Conditions. Saturday is Park's Day. We will have games and prizes on hand for our Knapweed pull Come down at 2:00 p.m. join us at the playground asWe make a dent in the Knapweed's plans to take over the parks open areas Later in the evening at 7:30, a game of trivial pursuit sets the Stage for discovering some of Syringa’s little known facts. Every summer we have insects bugging us There are those that bite - flies and mosquitoes, those that bite and hang on - ticks, and those that sting - bees and wasps. Most people have only minor local reactions. The area swells, looks red and may be painful. A few people, however, who are allergic to bees may have severe life threateming reactions Take simple precautions to prevent insect bites. When outdoors, wear shoes and clothing that covers arms and legs, Wear light colors and avoid floral prints. Avoid perfumes outdoors Use mosquito nets when camping. To avoid bee stings don't picnic near open garbage cans Don't leave food out Use an insect repellent. Those containing DEET (diethyltoluamide) and permethrin are most effective. DEET is absorbed through the skin, so apply it sparingly - only to exposed skin. Avoid concentrations greater that 50 percent. DEET and all insecticides should be stored out of reach of children These products.can be fatal if swallowed Don't put repellent on children’s hands. Wash your hands after applying it and before touching food. Be careful not to get the product into eyes. Wash it off when you or your children come indoors. Pregnant women and small chil- dren should not use DEET containing products. They can use a safer product “skin so soft” by Avon Treat a local reaction with a cool cloth Calamine lotion often stops itching and a steri- od (cortisone) cream may reduce the irritation Don't use an antihistamine cream, as skin reac tions can occur Antihistamines orally (benadryl, cetrizine) are better, If very painful Tylenol may help Ticks needs a bit of caution when removing them, They wary h heads ufider their MEDICAL MATTERS the skin. Some people put a drop of petroleum, gasoline, kerosene or nail polish on the tick. It then retracts its head Otherwise put a needle between the mouth parts and gently pull the tick off Usually people get a mild reaction only. Rarely the tick may carry lyme disease or tick paralysis Those who are allergic to bees, may have serious life threatening reactions. They often faint after the sting; they may get diarrhoea or vomiting, they may get short of breath with dif ficulty breathing, they usually become pale The area around the sting will swell and the swelling may spread up the limb, or though the body. They may have hives (a red blotchy rash). When people have a mild allergic reaction they may just have a runny nose and watery eyes, and a bit of tingling around the tongue or mouth area. When people are stung by a bee - Brought to you by Castlegar's Medical Staff remove the See BUGGED = frustration scale.
