HOW THEY “ENTERED -Graphic Description of the Approach to Pekin. By Associated Press. Pekin, Aug. 14.—Via post—The army transport when it reached Pekin, was a unique’ spectacle. Miles ot animals, vehicles and cool- ies trailed behind, everything imagi- nable on wheels, from farm wagons to fashionable traps was impressed, and every horse, mule and China- man in the path was commandered. The Japanese had cows. bearing packs and the Russians had ‘camels. Chinamen, pulled.the carts and stag~- gered under heavy packs, the sol- diers cursing and beating them. Several dropped dead. Twe hundred junks and scows bearing munitions. were towed up the river by the coolies. Had the Chinese taken the. offensive, most of the transportation might have easily been. captured and cut to pieces by *small flanking parties. After it. became apparent that the enemy was demoralized, the gener- als trusted the transportation to luck and bent their efforts towards getting ahead. Only such an emergency as existed could have justified such hardships as were im- posed upon the troops. The reception the survivors gave the army was worth the hardships the troops had undergone. The besieged moved the barricades and when the gates swung inward and the British colors appeared, there arose a great continuous cheer on both sides. An hour afterwards, General Chaffee, riding at the head of the American. infantry, marched to the Tartar wall. When told that the British had entered before them the American general looked disap- pointed. But, although the Ameri- cans were behind the last of the British forces, many of the Eunich guards have left the palace, and have surrendered themselves. The inmates. of the palace have been assured that they will be treated with every consideration. NOTES ABOUT PEOPLE. G,. Washington Bro (qa RIGHT A DRAW. and W. plugs McKinly Quit Even. Last night's fight at the Inter- national between Brown and Mc- Kinley was a draw. An address by the governor gener- alof Canada would hardly draw a larger assembly. George Wash- ingtou Brown has evidently learned several paragraphs since his appear- ance with Chauncey Depew. He went ten rounds at a pace he was unable to maintain for a half ronnd in his former battles. He was in good condition, and nothing short of a ball bat would have given him a dizzi William J Mc- Kinley ably represented the smelter town, and is certainly a hard game. He resembles Fitzsimmons in every- thing but color, and like Fitz puts up a shifty fight. The fight .was a clean one and is regarded as one of the best ever pulled off here. George was clearly in the best condition. The lanky man from the smelter town let George do the leading, and met the leads with a lefthanded upper cut. George didn’t bring anything, except his face with which to’stop them. The lanky man was unquestion- ably the cleverer with his hands, and had he been in as good con- dition as the Rossland man, would probably have won the fight. Some of the audience hooted and made various rude remarks during the last four rounds, and were evi- dently skeptical about the ‘‘square- ness” of the fight; but most of the knowing ones thought the boys fought all they could, and were un- able to hold the pace set in the first few rounds. The fight lasted the full twenty reunds and was declared a draw. Col. Jack Egan acted as referee. W.J. Vennor was time keeper for Brown, and Commodore Tom C. Gray for McKinley.
