Visibility key to driving safety

(NC) - What you can’t see
when. you're driving is what
you just might run into. One
of the basic keys to safe driv-
ing is to have all windows
and mirrors clean and free of
any obstruction.

According to automotive
specialists at General
Motors, all glass surfaces of
a vehicle should be cleaned
on a regular basis or whenev-
er visibility becomes reduced
due to foreign matter on
either the inside or outside of
windows.

The GM specialists caution
that you should never use

abrasive cleaners on any
vehicle glass, since they may
cause scratches. If an abra-
sive cleaner is used on the
inside of the rear window,
electric defogger elements
could be damaged. For the
same reason, never place
decals on the inside of the
rear window, as they may
have to be scraped off later.

‘Data Vision’ to help

(NC) - A new head-up display
developed by General Motors’
Delco Electronics is coming to
the aid of law enforcement offi-
cials. The new system puts mug
shots, street maps and rap sheets
in front of police officers while
in their cruisers.

Head-up display works by
projecting a translucent image
that appears to float in space
above the front bumper of a
car. Unlike the head-up dis-
plays currently used by GM in
some of its passenger cars
today, this new display (called
DataVision) consists of three
components: a display projec-

tion unit mounted on the ceil-
ing of the vehicle; a “combin-
er” screen, which attaches to
the windshield and is located
left of the rearview mirror;
and a display electronics unit,
which houses the system’s
power supply.

While DataVision technol-
ogy is not available for
everyday passenger use, it is
possible that it may be used
for future intelligent vehicle
highways systems.

the sides of highways could
allow equipped vehicles to
gather data through interac-

tive communications, essen-
tially replacing the function
of road signs and billboards.
Finding the closest fast food
restaurant or hotel could be
as easy as entering the infor-
mation into the system while
driving down the highway.
Passenger-car head-up dis-
play technology has been
found to be helpful for older
drivers at night who have
trouble refocusing after
looking at the instrument
panel and then back to the
road. Head-up display will

(NC) - Safety researchers
from General Motors and
the University of Michigan
have launched a joint study
on the safety of pregnant
women in vehicle crashes,
which includes develop-
ment of a pregnant female
crash dummy.

According to Dr. David
Viano, principal research sci-
entist at GM, the two objec-
tives of the study are to learn
more about what happens in
the uterus as the result of trau-
ma in a vehicle crash, aid sec-
ondly, to possibly devise new
safety restraint systems that are
specific for pregnant women.

Dr. Mark Pearlman of the
Department of Obstetrics
and Gynecology at the Uni-
versity of Michigan says,
“There is evidence today that
many pregnant women are
not wearing safety belts

when we have known since
the ‘60s that safety belts
have helped women protect
their babies.”

“There is a misunderstand-
ing by some people that
somehow safety belts can
injure unborn babies,”
according to Pearlman,
“while the best evidence is
that this is not the case,
except in a small number of
instances. On net, the safety
benefits of wearing seat belts
during pregnancy far out-
weigh the risks.”

The GM and University
of Michigan researchers
are developing a fetal
insert dummy simulating a
seven-month unborn child
that will be used in crash
tests on a Sth percentile
Hybrid II dummy.

Measurements will be
taken on acceleration of the

fetal head and chest as well
as pressure applied to the
abdomen in crash testing.
These readings are expected
to give an indication of the
relative safety of different
restraint configurations.

Both Viano and Pearlman
stress proper positioning of
safety belts for pregnant
women. They say that the
belts should be worn low
under the pregnant uterus -
the seat belt portion under
the bulge of the pregnant
tummy and over the pelvic
bones, and the shoulder belt
between the breasts and over
the shoulder.

As has been the case with
most of its safety research,
GM will share the results of
this testing with other auto
manufacturers to maximize
the public benefit
