utlook dim for wimmers in '92 EMONTON (CP) — There's a jot of talent swimming around in Canada's pools, but Canadians phouldn't expect more than a handful of medals. at the 1992 ‘Dlympics in Barcelon: the president of the sport's national prganization, “You have to be in the the top three or four going into a world thampionship or an Olympic Games to have a chance at medalling — let alone winning a gold,” Tom Pinkard of Swim- ming Canada said after the Pan- pscine championships wrapped up Sunday. ? “You can come from outside, but the chances are very rare.” } The Pan-Pacs are held every wo years and along with the ‘uropean championships, are the last major international qmeet before the Olympics. Cana- da finished well behind the jUnited States and Australia this Year with one gold, five silver and four bronze. Two of those medals came in the 25-kilometre distance swim which is not an Olympic event. : Pinkard's assessment indi- gates there at least half a dozen Canadian swimmers in tontention for a medal in Barcelona. “We have six, seven or eight athletes who, going into this competition, were ranked in the top four of the world at some point this year.” ; Backstroker Mark Tewksbury jand butterfly specialist Marcel Gery have the best shot at gold. = Tewksbury, a 23-year-old University of Calgary student, Jost to American Jeff Rouse at the Pan-Pacific meet and also at Perth, Australia, earlier this ar. But the two have been so close it could come down to who has the longer fingernails when they swim the 100-metre back- stroke in Spain. Gery has a top-three ranking in the 100-metre butterfly. He lost out on the weekend to U.S. swimming sensation Matt Bion- di by three one-hundredths of a second and placed ahead of Biondi in Perth. Gery, 26, has never competed in the Olympics and has no ranking. The Torontonian left Czech- oslovakia in 1986 and could not get his Canadian citizenship in time for the_1988 Games in Seoul. He missed the Los Ange- les Games four years earlier due to a boycott by communist coun- tries. Other swimmers to watch on the men's side include Gary Anderson — who won the 200- metre individual medley at the Pan-Pacs and came in fourth at the worlds — and Jon Cleve- land, who took a gold in the 200- metre breaststroke at last year's Commonwealth Games. Names don't spring to mind on the women's side, but Pinkard said there are several strong contenders, including breaststroker Keltie Duggan and medley specialist Nancy Sweetnam.'Duggan, 21 next month, has several international Mt. Among the many hues of reds, blues, and pinks are bell of the Ireland and, of course, the mysterious night stalk that releases its magical scent throughout the neighborhood yards. It’s the custom of the people living on the benchland of 9th, 10th and 11th avenues to go for a walk in the cool of the h ig. It’s to see a of people in the entrance to her driveway admiring her flowers and trying to identify the fragrant scent of the night stalk or.the carnations. When viewing the flowers, images of paintings of flowers by Claude Monet come to mind. It’s been said that the purest form of expressing your amazement in life is found within the people who tend flower gardens. In Stella’s home sits a row of gleaming trophies — 10 to be exact — won 10 years in a row from 1959 to 1969, a testimony to her expertise, won for having the best flower garden. The trophies were donated yearly for the competition by the late Herbert W. Herridge, MP for the West Kootenay. In all likelihood, Stella’s garden helped contribute to the coining of the name “Garden City” for Kinnaird. Sadly, however, in the last few years the growing of flowers had diminished. Perhaps there is some service club or a group of individuals in town who could create an incentive for these artists to become active again. gold medals to her credit, but has just gotten back into compe- tition after recovering from knee surgery.
