Castlégar News January 19, 1986 Bird species spotted The West Kootenay Nat. uralists held annual Boxing Day bird count Dee. 28 and about 30 observers recorded 62 with a total of 6,941 individual birds sighted. It was not a good day for the count of the water birds, as the early bitter weather had frozen much of the shal low water and the water fow! had flown to more open water. But the number of seed eaters — the noisy little birds that sing and chatter as they clamber over the branches and twigs of trees and bush es, was considerably above normal. The most familiar of these birds to most people is the chickadee, and this year 528 “Talk about overstuffed!" . But not over priced! The pine siskin checked in with 828, while 140 bright yellow goldfinches and 113 dark-eyed juncos made the list. Our list of sightings has been forwarded to the Pro- vincial Museum for inclusion in their master record, and other interested people. One rather unexpected high sighting for this time of year was the 24 dippers, the small dark-grey bird that lives in or beside our creeks and streams, and calmly swims and walks under water and even under the ice looking for its dinner among the rocks and pebbles. Under the heading of unex pected sightings was a kill- deer and two common snipes, normally birds of open grass- land and lake shores, while subs . . . made daily! * Murchies Teas & Coffees * Imported Foods * Party Trays * Borscht + Meats * Cheeses COUNTRY HARVEST DELI 1436 Columbie Ave. 365-5414 RENT-A-BOBCAT (With Operator) * Light Excovannng Effective til Sat., Jan. 25 Open Monday - Saturday — 9 to 5:30 PLAZA CLEANERS Castleaird Plaza 365-5145 both the white throated and Harris’ sparrow were new to us. If they are you might like reading this lovely portion of Scrip- ture again, the 23rd Psalm, in this unusual way. The Psalm is from the King James Version while the amplifying verses are selected from the Revised Standard Version. “The Lord is my shepherd. I am the good shepherd, I know my own and my own know me. I shall not want. My God will supply every need. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures. I will feed them with good pasture, and upon the mountain heights of Israel shall be their pasture. He leadeth me beside the still waters. Ho, every one who thirsts, come to the waters, and he who has no money, come buy and eat. He restoreth my soul. The law of the Lord is perfect, re- viving the soul. I will restore health to you, and your wounds I will heal, says the Lord.” He leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake. I am the way and the truth and the life, no one comes to the Father buy by me. “Yea, though I walk thro’ the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil. Though I walk in the midst of trouble, thou dost preserve my life, thou dost stretch out thy hand against the wrath of mine enemies, and thy right hand delivers me. Thou art with me. Lo, I am with you always, to the close of the age. Thy rod and thy staff, they comfort me. The rod and give wisdom, but a child left to himself brings shame to his mother. Shep- herd thy people with thy staff, the flock of thy inher- itance. “Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies. Every good endowment and every per- fect gift is from above, com- ing down from the Father. Thou anointest my head with oil. How much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him? My cup runneth over. To him who . . . is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think. “Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life. The steadfast love of the Lord is from ever- lasting. I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever. In my Father's house are many rooms . . . I go to prepare a place for you.” Women’s Aglow meet President Dolores Eaton opened the first meeting of 1986 of the Castlegar Wom- en's Aglow Fellowship with a reading from Psalm 118, des- cribing the ever-enduring | money and love of God. jing in praise and wor- ship’ Fran Cormier expanded the theme of the Lord's personal loving care for each one. Margaret asked the Lord for a voice to sing. With a child-like, bell-like voice she began to sing praises to God each day. Although there was much pain and the paralysis had crippled her, she was not frightened. As she asked the Lord to help her move, Mar- garet progressively regained use of limbs. From being totally bedrid- den, requiring two nurses to move her, she now walks and drives a car again. Attending doctors and nurses have acknowledged this is beyond normal, natural healing. Mar- garet gives credit to God: “It was the Lord. It was prayer.” Special guest speaker was Penny Bates, former presi- dent of Women's Aglow Fellowship in Nelson. Coming from an unhappy childhood, she has been hap- pily married for 25 years, with three children. She has been a member of the United Church in Nelson for 24 years. Penny strongly encour. aged women to faith, love and good deeds. First one must come to faith in God, she said, learning to know Jesus Christ and experience Him, “for it is He who made us.” The good news that Jesus loves and came to save each one from sin is to be proclaimed, she said. Referring to Isaiah 61 in the bible, Penny explained that the Lord wants to en- courage, restore, and heal in- dividuals. He wants to change sorrow to joy. When we are personally restored, Penny exhorted that we are to reach out to others as the Lord calls us, to help them to repair and re- build their lives. eople’s Insulation Services *500 CONTINUES 19 “875.
