The cha CHAPEL | house on Zucker- berg Island Heritage Park will be officially opened CHAPEL HOUSE OPENS All are but parts of on stupendous whole of whose body Nature is and God the soul — Pope in An Essay on A glance through the visitors book at the Zuckerberg Island Heritage Park Chapel House reveals the following samplings of places and comments: “Just out for a jog and found a nice surprise.” — Victoria. “Rich with history. Love it.” — Rossland. “Surprising.” — Cliffside Park, N.Y. “Most enjoyable.” — Regina, Sask. “Played here as a child.” — Grand Forks. “How unique and charming.” — Lincolnshire, England. “A delightful tour with delightful company.” Station, New Haven. “Lovely. A peaceful retreat.” — Crossfield, Alta. And on it goes. Two thousand people visited the Chapel House last summer, both local citizens and from many parts of the world. Every day scores more come to — Yale in a ceremony at 2 p.m. today. CosNews Photo bids fair with proper guidance to become an essential part of a larger eco-museum, an extended outdoor classroom for future of Castlegar Primarily, however, it must remain and continue to be a sanctuary, a peaceful oasis, a place to restor the sould in a noisy, materialistic society. For some citizens with long memories it will have poignant links to their childhood “adventure island”; for others it will be a window toa cultural heritage which they never knew but can now realize; to the children it is a happy place and a broader future. For all of us it is a special place to which we can take friends and show off with proprietary pride, or visit alone with a sense of a healing spirit. I will always remember our visit to the historic cityof York in Britain with its famous cathedral, York Minster, at its centre and its cherished fragments of Roman, Norse, Middle Ages and Renaissance architecture and myriads of ghosts. The sense of pride in the city began with the cabbie who took us from the railway station with its world-famous railway museum. “This is Rougier Street,” he said, and he delighted Bunny immediately; she had been wondering for years how a French Hugenot had gotten into a family of MacDonalds. “Our city is 2,000 years old, it was here before the Romans came. The archeologists excavated the original Roman headquarters under the Minster while repairing the foundations . . .” In our five-minute trip we had a mini-history, and learned where to go and the easiest way, and there were scores like him in every occupation ‘ftom tite -retited who was a member of a large group of enjoy the quiet, the peace and the of the house and the park. Today, at 2 p.m. Mayor Audrey Moore is scheduled to officially open the chapel house, a major event, conspicuous by its abscence in the Castlegar News Sunfest 87 supplement's list of events. The work on the house is not quite complete (high water and consequent lack of vehicle access has been a contributing factor), but the fact of its existence and development is to be officially recognized. Five years ago, after one summer's work by the Castlegar Rotary team the newly-rescued island was given official status as a park. It wasn't finished either. In fact, the club invested another full summer in its development and has continued its interest in both the park and the Chapel House to the present moment. The following year Mayor Moore and Brig.-Gen. Mike Heppell officially opened the suspension bridge, which for several months of each year is our only link to the heritage park and is therefore a life preserver for some of our more determined and reckless would-be visitors. It isn't finished either. The two pairs of Canada geese who started their families in the shadow of the island this spring and proudly convoyed them along the shore aren't finished either. Details in their environment have been notified, but the broad and integrated continum of their lives in this small corner of earth goes on as it has for countless previous generations of other geese and will continue for countless generations yet unborn: together with all the other things — animate and inanimate — which make the island park one of a kind. Because of its particular location, its numerous pit house and cache sites, and other evidence of long and volunteer guides who took “guests” (they refused any payment) on two-hour walks about the city ta the conductor who on being questioned as to the location of the medieval merchant's guild house, stopped his bus, got out and by word and gesture gave us the most careful directions to ensure that we got there. In a like manner I would see citizens of Castlegar involved in our own small but unique special place, as guides about the island, as hosts to keep the Chapel house open to visitors and as general protectors of the environment and its future careful and natural growth. It is a small and fragile thing and like liberty needs constant vigilance. Fortunately, we already have a nucleus of such dedicated people. We do need many more, for as Mr. Zuckerberg wisely saw, the house without the island is without essential meaning, the island without both its internal history and internal and external environment is without essential meaning, and all of these are ongoing. But it is only so with Ithe loving and understanding care and protection of its friends. Come therefore, to the Chapel House, to witness one more chapter in the story of our community and be once more part of our past, present and future. The new brochures prepared by Bill Sloan and Nancy Felde, directors on the Heritage Advisory Committee, are ready and are receiving much well-earned praise. Come and get you copy, share the opening and a little refreshment as well. The Guides and Scouts will be helping — our first line of Friends of the Island. Footnote: An omen? A most pleasant couple from Wyoming arrived about 8 a.m. delighted with the park and delighted to find the house open. The night before a honeymoon couple had arrived just as I was cleaning up. It never ceases to surprise me how many pleasant guests we have here and from what variety of places they come. A good sign methinks.
