“ Castlegar News August 5, 1987 Taylor at work on Hansen book By DENISE HELM Canadian Press VANCOUVER — Although it's only mid-morning, Jim Taylor looks tired. He has been up since 5 a.m. preparing the three sports he from his home by 7:30 a.m. for several radio stations in British Columbia and Alberta. Then he began work on the next chapter of the book he’s co-writing with Rick Hansen, the “Man-in-Motion™ wheelchair athlete, Taylor must also find time to write his daily sports column in the Vancouver Province, a column with an offbeat and opinionated nature that has readers either loving or hating him. It will be Taylor's fourth book. He has already written about football player Jim Young, hockey star Wayne Gretzky and the Edmonton Eskimos of the Canadian Football League. His face is thinner than the one peering out at readers from the top of his column in The Province's sports pages. In March, two weeks before his 50th birthday, Taylor was told he had diabetes, which has put completion of the Hansen book behind schedule. He has lost 27 pounds and during six weeks on the road with Hansen, he spent a lot of time sleeping and drinking litres of milk and water. But Taylor's commitment to the Hansen book runs deeper than just his admiration for the young hero. The book is also for his 26-year-old daughter, Teresa, one of the disabled who will never be a hero or be able to pursue their dreams. A skiing accident 11 years ago left her brain damaged, a quadriplegic confined to a wheelchair. With personal knowledge of the handicapped, Taylor began planning a book in 1982 on disabled athletes that would include chapters on Hansen, a world-class wheelchair competitor. Then plans for Hansen's two-year tour around the world were launched and Taylor committed himself instead to chronicling the tour. “I started out just wanting to do it (the book) because of my daughter,” said Taylor, leaning forward in his oak swivel chair. “When she was in a coma for months and months, like everyone else it happens to, we didn't know what to do.” GROUPS HELPED Taylor said the Canadian Paraplegic Association and similiar groups helped him ahd his wife through the crisis. Taylor is writing bel book from 8 hours of tape in which Hansen ‘hts during his two-y Man-in-Motion piokeedy Taylor recalls one section of tape recorded by Hansen late at night. It was the only time Taylor heard Hansen feeling sorry for himself. The athlete was lying in a hotel room, waiting for his fiancee, Amanda, to return with ice for his swollen arms when she was invited to a party in another room. Taylor said Hansen was mumbling to himself: “Somebody is trying to pick up Amanda and what can I do about that; I mean I can't even go out there.” Glancing at his computer terminal, Taylor said he has worked to make it a “true book that tells the inside of the tour, inside the minds of disabled people.” Hansen can be “tough, mean and self-centred,” said Taylor. The book will not be about “St. Rick.” VALHALLAS Fjord-like setting for provincial park By CasNews Staff Set in the beautiful fjord-like Slocan Lake area, Valhalla Provincial Park has been justifiably called Canada’s Shangri-La. The park area totals nearly 50,000 hectares (more than 122,000 acres) on the west side of Slocan Lake. One of the park's unique features is that it extends from the low elevation shoreline of a major lake to high alpine meadows and rugged spires. The park may be divided into three zones: the lakeshore, the major creek drainages, and the alpine. The park's frontage on Slocan Lake has 30 kilometres of remote shoreline with verdant mountain slopes of mostly immature timber. Along the shore are a number of rock faces with pictographs from the now-extinct Lake Indians. There are some fine beaches for swimming and camping, and magnificent waterfalls on some of the larger creeks ( see below) thunder towards the lake within easy walking distance of the shore. Castlegar News publisher Burt Campbell and some friends recently hiked one of the park's many newly upgraded trails: the Slocan to Evans Creek Trail. The trail extends along the west side of Slocan Lake 7.6 km from Slocan City to the mouth of Evans Creek. Parking is at Slocan City near the bridge which crosses the Slocan River near its mouth. Walk from the parking area to the start of the trail.
