Story, page A3. : Protester released after 16 days in Nelson jail @ Michael Gilfillan of Thrums arrested oe logging protest Sept. 2 Thomas Bink NEWS REPORTER A protester arrested at Lasca northeast of Nelson on Sept. 24 was released from prison Thursday after spending 16 days in jail in protest of watershed log- oa Thrums, who was also arrested at Hasty Creek on Sept..6. “It was think it was a really good ex- perience,” said Michael Gatgtlan of ging road. But Castlegar lawyer Kenneth Wyllie, who represented Gilfillan in court, said the RCMP had no authority, under the court order by which he was arrested, to require him to sign it in the first place. “There was no authority to re- quest that information,” Wyllie said. Gilfillan will appear in court on Oct. 15 to argue the legality of the case. Gilfillan said his incarceration was not what he had expected. He was placed in a 12 foot by six foot RCMP holding cell in Nelson, and went as long as three days with- out a shower. He was allowed only one phone call and one visitor per Cominco for 16 years. Gilfillan said he read books and wrote a lot while in jail. “But I spent most of the time just lying there,” he said. CastleZar lawyer Terry Dalton said the visitor limitations were unusual. Dalton said he tried to give Gilfillan some books to read while in jail, but the RCMP would not permit it. “It is extremely wrong that Michael is denied books,” Dalton said. Gilfillan said he has made no plans to return to Lasca Creek, but added, “I can't say I won't.” He said he hopes to get involved in other local watershed issues, but would not say if he was will- to again. “It’s a little to soon to say,” Gil- fillan said. “But it's possible.” Saturday October 12, 1991 Sad 75¢ M™ 3 Sections, A,B & C 60SECONDS |@FEATURE = FEATURE Martin Vanderpol returns to Robson He's back, and he's still the same.
