Wasn't Carl Reiner on the “The Dick Van. Dyke Show"? I've always liked him, but I know so little about him. Can you fill in the picture? - B.K., St. Paul, Minn. Carl Reiner Carl Reiner played Alan Brady, Dick Van Dyke's TV boss, from 1961-66 in the popu- lar comedy series. He was also that show's head writer, and he won three Emmys for Best Writing in a Comedy Series. Born March 20, 1922, in the Bronx, N.Y., Reiner served in the Army during World War II, then went from entertaining troops to entertaining audi- ences in Broadway revues. Af- ter being discharged, Reiner went into the fledgling field of television, putting in brief stints in several series before becoming a regular on Sid Caesar's classic comedy series “Your' Show of Shows” (1950- 54). (Reportedly Reiner based bis Alan Brady character on Caesar.) He developed the idea for what would later become “The Dick Van Dyke Show” during ‘the late '50s and even filmed a pilot, with himself cast in the part of Rob Petrie. The multi-talented Reiner has also enjoyed success as the director of such films as “Oh, God!” (1977) and “The Jerk” (1979), a novelist (“Enter Laughing”) and even a stand- up comedian: His “2,000 Year Old Man” routine with Mel Brooks is a classic. Reiner has been most re- cently seen on television as host of NBC's short-lived “Sun- day Best.” He is the father of former “All in the Family” cast member and current suc- cessful director Rob Reiner.
