Page B8 The Castlegar Sun Wednesday, September 20, 1995 Singing the Bones at Capitol Theatre Submitted Singing the Bones, coming tot Nelson's Capitol Theatre this Satur- day, Sept. 23, teams the artistic tal- ents of B.C. playwright/performer Caitlin Hicks ‘and internationally actlaimed jazz/blues/gospel singer and songwriter Dee Daniels in a one-night only pér- formance of theatre and music. Singing the Bones, Hicks’ \at- est play, contains mystery, sci- ence fiction, drama and comedy. It tells the story of three women: Nicole, a strong.and vulnerable mother; Med, a midwife who believes in women’s ultimate power in birth; and Sara, the obstetrician whose secrets are “leaking from every pocket”. The play follows the high-risk twin pregnancy of Nicole, a young French Canadian who chooses home birth. Singing the Bone gives birth the kind of dignity and respect it deserves and makes it central to all our lives,” said Gord Halloran, director of Singing the Bones. “It's a great story for all of us, one I'm totally commnitted to. There is definitely a lot of humour. The characters are real people, so it runs the gamut of emotions — it's very moving.” Caitlin Hicks, who plays all three characters, has performed on the CBC and successfully toured Canada and the U.S. with her original plays “Six Palm The LOCK at Hugh Keenleyside will be closed to BOAT TRAFFIC 2p.m. Sept 22 until 6p.m. October 8, 1995, for annual mechanical and electrical maintenance. B.C. Hydro is sorry for any inconvenience. BChydro Trees” and “Just a Little Fever” She has recently toured the East and West Kootenays, performing in Trail, Nelson, Grand Forks, Christina Lake, Kaslo, Cran- brook, Fernie, Ymirand Creston. Dee Daniels wrote the original music for Singing the Bones with lyrics by Hicks. For this block- buster event, she will accompany Hicks’ performance of the play, as well as opening the evening with a “variety of songs that have special meaning to me,” Daniels said. Daniels has performed her jazz, blues and gospel music to audiences all over the world, including Europe, Africa, Hong Kong and North America. Now living in Vancouver, she played to a full house last year at Nel- son's Studio 80 and was recently seen on CBC television's “Hooked on the Blues” Hicks and Halloran will also present a workshop on Sunday, Sept. 24 entitled “Solo Flight: From Personal Experience to Theatrical Reality”, covering every aspect of developing your strongly personal vision toward and Camping it up: The Robson Children’s Centre held day camps for children 6 to 12 years old throughout the summer. One of the week-long themes was “camping”. An overnight campout was enjoyed by eight children and eight adults, complete with a sing-a-long accompanied by Phil Morris on guitar. Complete with s'mores and a sleep out in the tent and on the deck under the stars, the night was enjoyed by chil- dren and adults alike. A pancake breakfast was cooked up for hungry mouths by Pam Suecroft and Susie Heppner the following morning. _ > = Photo submitted Wednesday, September 20, 1995 The Castlegar Sun Page B9 New dental office...another reason to smi Driving by the pleasing addition to the Columbia Avenue neighborhood So next time you're driving ‘centre one would find it hard to believe | down Columbia Avenue check it that the centre out! is’ anything more than 4 gracious and welcoming home. The gracious lines of the Castl looks good from the perfectly into the neighborhood. Spaciousness, comfort, airiness and discreet elegance are wotds one would use to describe Dr. Gorman’'s new dental centre. Located next to Canadian Tire at 2024 Columbia Avenue, the Castlegar Dental Centre can't be missed. It's a far cry from the previous facility in the Castleaird Plaza from which Dr Gormanand his staff worked. Surrounded by trees, and graciously awaiting patients, the centre is not what one usually expects at a dentist Inside you won't find harsh comers, nor will you find a cold room designed purely for function. Instead, designer David Dobie said he designed the dental centre with specifics in mind. He knows the need for a relaxed atmosphere while at the same time assuring an efficient workplace. He also understands that buildings are more than lumber and nails; that they have to have a personality of their own—a personality which is inviting and relaxing. With that in mind Dobie went to work “I would describe the inter being curvacious. It has curve inside and the intent was to disarm patients—to make them feel at ea Dobie-knew he had a challenge when asked to design the building which included the renovation of an existing building. Acknowledging that many people have a fear of dentists, Dobie went about creating an atmosphere which was inviting, while at the same time efficient. Walking into the centre one knows that Dobie has overcome the challenge and created an oasis where patients can wait and be treated in comfort Curved walls, subtle warm tones and generous woodwork all combine to make the patient at ease. A large waiting area where patients can look out a large window while passing time abuts a large fully stocked play area for children. It’s hard to find a full interior wall in treatment areas. Instead Dobie chose to design partial walls which shield the patient from view, yet allow the feeling of spaciousness ‘and comfort to drift through to the rooms. A curved ceiling ties it all together. Subtle overhead lighting lends a rosy glow adding to the feeling of well-being and comfort “Everyone feels vulnerable lying in a dental chair,” said Dobie when explaining his liberal use of curves, space and color. “There's a feeling of roominess.” While designing the building, Dobie knew he wanted a building which would blend into the neighborhood—a building which wasn't imposing with a commercial “look” “When I was approached to design the building, I saw it as an opportunity to blend a commercial office into a residential area without destroying the neighborhood.” And Dobie has done just that street.” Smiling staff and patients greet those who enter and it's perfectly obvious that Dobie has exceeded himself while overcoming obstacles.
