And that’s being ISMIARas Power Smart Saves More Than Money The Castlegar Bantam “AA” Reps returned from the North Okanagan (Enderby) AA/AAA Bantam Rep Tournament with the first place trophy this past weekend. They defeated Aldergrove “AAA” Bantam Reps 9-2, Semi- ahmoo 8-2, and Merritt AAA Bantam Reps 8-7 in the ‘A’ side final. With the score tied 7-7 after regulation, the game went into a shootout with Castlegar coming out on top. This tournament once again featured top notch excellent hockey and tough competition for the Castlegar squad. They really had to dig deep and work é€xtremely hard to win. This is the Castlegar Bantam Rep’s third tournament victory out of four they have attended this year, which is quite an accomplishment. Furthermore, this statistic real- ly affirms the latest scouting report ranking that the Castlegar Bantam Reps are amongst the top five in the province. The Bantams are settling down this weekend with just one game versus Nelson in Nelson this Saturday at 2:45 p.m. Pee Wee’s follow bad Trail in Kimberley Submitted Castlegar Pee Wee Reps returned from the annual Kim- berley Pee Wee Rep (AA/AAA) tournament with a 2-2 record. They posted impressive wins over Creston 17-3 and Grand Forks 14-2. However, they lost to Trail in a close game and also to Fernie. The Pee Wees have continued to play hot and cold all season but the two games against Grand Forks and Creston proved they could play brilliant hockey. Also, the game against Trail was very close until the end and could have easily been a victory for Castlegar as the local boys played their hearts out The final against Fernie featured a mediocre effort by the Castlegar squad, as it appeared they were a tired hockey club towards the end of the tournament The Pee Wees get a chance to avenge their loss to Trail when they travel to the Silver City Sat- urday. Game time is 2:45 p.m. The Pee Wees then have a nice break over Christmas SIDELINES Classic Contest Over Jurisdiction Every year it’s the same story. Who's tougher and who's most feared/respected - the Castlegar RCMP detachment or the West Kootenay Hockey Offici: That ion is settled ly on the ice every December as authority figures from both outfits discard their normal uniforms and don hockey regalia for their annual chari- ty game. This year the game will be taking place Dec. 14 at the Complex with a start time of 7:30 p.m.. All proceeds will go to the Salvation Army, At this point, there’s only one question to be answered. If all the referees are on the ice playing, who'll referee the game? Afier all, the referees and the police know alll the tricks to get- ting away with minor rule infractions. Therefore you'd need some- one who knows the game and knows the tricks. I bet there's a large number of Rebel players who would be lining up to do the game. A New Draw To A Familiar Button Local Seniors completed their first draw of the curling season with two teams tying for top honors. The Alex Bojey and Buzz McDon- ald rinks both ended up with six wins and one loss. With the December draw now underway, curlers are getting into the swing of things and, as a result, some good curling is taking place. More results will be out in January with Bojey and McDonald battling it out for senior curling supremacy. And who knows, there may be a new force on the horizon. Castle Bow! McKeachie played for the Red Army and looked good as a right winger and occasional defenceman. Although he may be lacking speed, the big winger was more than a match for former Rebel Nino Dacosta who gave up more than a foot in height and more than a few pounds on the scale. The Red Army ended up winning the game thanks to good defence, great goaltending and a special pre-game strengthening elixir which is a closely guarded secret. McKeachie will be back in town at the end of the month to M.C. the RMJHL All-Star Game which will fea- ture Dave “Tiger” Williams, among others: Rocky Hockey rolls but Horcoff rocks SUN SPORTS STAFF They call it Rocky Hockey and that's exactly what it has turned out to be this year. The RMJHL has completed just over half its schedule this season with the Grande Prairie Storm of the Peace Cariboo Division leading the way with 44 points. The Prince George Spruce Kings are neck-and- neck with the Storm with 41 points in five fewer games. The standings couldn't be any closer in the Kootenay Division with Nelson trailing the Cranbrook Colts by just a single point for the Division lead. Both have played 26 games with Cranbrook having 32 points. The RMJHL released its all- star roster this week with only two Nelson Leafs making the squad. Defencemen Jeff Greig and Chad Matheson are the only Nelson representatives on the Kootenay squad but there are three more Leafs listed as alter- nates in case of injury. Cranbrook had the most play- ers on the Kootenay team with five while Prince George leads the Peace Cariboo team with six players. Coincidentally enough, the coaches for the two squads are Kelvin MacKay from Cran- brook and Gus Greco from Prince George. The RMJHL All-Star Classic will be held in Castlegar at the end of this month. Nelson won their only game last weekend, defeating Kim- berley 5-4 in a shoot-out Friday night. Nelson sniper Tyler McGeough was the hero as he scored the game winner in the @ Eight straight With the three wins the Rebels took over top spot in the league from the Sicamous Eagles plus Proved superiog ever South Divi- sion opponenis, Price isn’t excited by first place or the eight game streak but he does want those pre- cious South Division wins. “That's all we have to focus on and all we want,” said Price. “We want them to have it in the back of their minds that they're not going to beat us.” The Rebels next games are also against South Division teams. They travel to Rossland Friday night and then entertain a rematch with the Border Bruins at the Crypt Saturday. Both with six Rebels getting the nod in the South. The notable exceptions to the list are Mike Myhra, Radim Spondr and Dan Hopfner but all were ineligible since they played less than ten games. Rebel general manager Bryan Bucci was extremely pleased the Rebels were given the honor of coaching the game by virtue of the first place standing in the South Division. Price was happy to accept the honor of coaching the game but doesn’t have much “T’m just gonna show up, open SORE STEPPING OUT FOR THE HOLIDAYS? Castlegar continues to take centre stage in the BCJHL as hometown hero Shawn Horcoff held onto the scoring lead through games last weekend. Horcoff, who plays for the Chilliwack Chiefs, leads the league with 66 points (18 goals and 48 assists) in 29 games while linemate Tyler Quiring is aclose second with 63 points. The Trail Smoke Eaters also found themselves a little life by beating the Interior Division leading Vernon Vipers 4-0 at home Saturday night. Leading the Smokies was goalie Beau Riedel who made 35 saves in gaining the shutout and a share of the Subway/ICBC Player of the Week honors with Brant Nicklin of Nanaimo. Jon Newman used his 19th goal on the season to open the scoring which is all Riedel and the Smokies needed for the win. Trail now sits four points behind the Merritt Centennials for third spot in the Interior Division. They also have three games in hand. This week’s action will see them attack a gruelling three- game road trip starting Friday in Victoria and then continuing in Powell River on Saturday and Surrey on Sunday. All teams in the BCJHL are chasing the Chilliwack Chiefs who lead the league with 48 points in 31 games. They have one more win than Vernon.
