Last season he ran for 456 yards on 130 carries and caught 19 passes for 177 yards, scoring two touchdowns. He played in 12 games last season, starting six, and was held out of two. Pulpit & Pew By Pastor ED NEUFELD Evangelical Free Church Jesus and a Terminal Situation When a person is said to have a terminal case of cancer, all hope is given up for any possibility for a cure. Such a finding would naturally leave the patient and his or her family in a state of shock. When it comes to viewing your spiritual state, how have you dia gnosed it? Have you given up hope on yourself? Do you view your own spiritual state as being terminal? You may have given up on yourself, but there is still one person who as not; His name is Jesus Christ. In the 11th chapter of the Gospel of John, we have an incident where word is sent to Jesus and His dis- ciples that one of Jesus's friends, a man named Lazarus, was seriously ill. It's interesting Jésus did not rush to heal his friend, but waited two additional days. Only when word reached Jesus that Lazarus was dead did He and His disciples make there way to Bethany, where Lazarus, along with his two sisters, Mary and Martha lived. When word reaches both of Lazar- us's sisters that Jesus had just ar- rived, they each went out to meet Jesus and express their grief re. garding the death of their brother. Both Mary and Martha say the same thing: “If only you would have been here, Jesus, and healed him, Lazarus would still be alive.” It seems both Mary and Martha had a limited view of the extent of Jesus's power. To Lazarus's sisters this was a terminal situation. In spite of the emotionally-charged atmosphere, and the visible grief of both Mary and Martha, Jesus in John 11:25-26 says: “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies; and whoever lives and believes in me will never die.” It seems these words have little impact on the two sisters; likely going into one ear and out the other. Martha, particularly, was| not com. forted by these words, for she be- lieved that Jesus could do nothing to relieve her present feelings and sorrow over the loss of her brother Lazarus. But Martha and everyone else| in Bethany were in for a big surprise. So what does Jesus do? He goes to the place where Lazarus was buried. The people thought Jesus would just go there so that He could as well share in the grief and loss of Lazarus. No one was expecting Jesus to do much more. According to Jewish thinking, Lazarus was beyond help. It was believed that after a person died, that the soul of the deceased would hover around and over the body for three days, but on the fourth day the soul would depart for its eternal inati struggling to get out of his grave clothes. Jesus had done the impos- sible and again had proved Himself true to His Word. This miracle was, in fact, so spectacular that many skeptical Jews who witnessed this event, believed in the power of Jesus and put their faith in, Him. What about you, friend? Da you consider yourself as being beyond hope when it comes to becoming a Christian? Well, let me tell you, there is still hope for you. This same Jesus who entered into what appeared to be a hopeless situation can also enter into your life and raise you from your present spiritual deadness. To experience this radical change in your life, you need to recognize that you are a sinner, who is in need of salvation. Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life. He is the only way by which you can come to God. In light of this, will you not today accept Jesus Christ-as your Lord and Savior? Remember your spiritual state is not as terminal as you may think — especially when Jesus Christ enters the picture. hold day camp The West Kootenay Beaver Day Camp was held May 28 at Hidden Creek Ranch again this year. Despite the rain and having to relocate several of the stations to dryer places, the 180 boys and 100 adults from Grand Forks, Rossland, Trail, Nelson, Fruitvale and Castle- gar had a fun day. The theme, this year was Olympics with events such as discus toss, relay race, obstacle course, cooperative skiing, popcorn making, face pain- ting, flat coloring, bronco riding, torch making and cookie decorating. A hot lunch of Safeway hot dogs, McDonald's juice, Old Dutch potato ehips and Palm Dairy ice-cream was enjoyed. Martha, of all people, raised the strongest objec- tion by stating (as the King James version of the Bible puts it) “by this time he stinketh.” It’s obvious that Martha figured that Jesus could do nothing in this obviously terminal situation.
