NEAR GOLDEN Roadblock nabs truckers VICTORIA (CP) — A team of RCMP officers, motor ve hicle inspectors and federal officials is having a field day at a roadblock in the Rogers Pass near Golden in eastern British Columbia. From the start of the road block, Sunday afternoon until 8 a.m. PDT Monday, RCMP had ordered 61 commercial vehicles off the road — including two chartered buses. In addition, RCMP ar rested 43 persons on out standing warrants, laid two impaired driving charges one against a truck driver — charged two persons under the Liquor Act and issued 248 traffic tickets. A memo from superinten dent of motor vehicle Keith Jackman to Transportation and Highways Minister Alex Fraser said “a major roadside inspection blitz” was in effect on Highway 1 until 4 p.m. Tuesday Manning the roadblock are 30 RCMP officers, 12 motor vehicle department mechan. ical inspectors and weigh seale staff members, and a number of federal inspectors from the parks, agriculture and immigration depart ments. Up to8 a.m. Monday, 1,892 vehicles of all types had been stopped, the memo said. Full mechanical inspections were carried out on 397 com merical vehicles. Only 178 — fewer than half of them passed. Place corporate rela tions director The company, Halse-Mar tin Construction Ltd., sub- mitted the lowest of seven bids at $2,469,993. The top bid was $3.08 million. The roundhouse, the orig inal engine repair shop for CP Rail on False Creek's north shore, is d to just brakes, which means most of the grounded ve hicles were probably repair ed on the spot, rechecked and sent on, Jackman said in an interview. Of 58 out-of-province vehicles inspected, 42 passed and only four were taken off the road But only 136 of 339 B.C. based vehicles passed inspec. tion, while 57 were removed from the highway. The memo reported that Greyhound buses have been found in good condition, but two chartered buses, which were nat identified, were re moved from service. School bus-type vehicles used to carry workers were found “over-all in poor shape.” RCMP also issued tickets for 30 seat belt violations. “We have a serious prob- lem,” Fraser said. “Even the big operators are cutting back on maintenance because of the tough economic times.
