The message, signed by USCC Honorary Chairman John J. Verigin and the chairman and secretary of the USCC executive, stressed international peace. “We are more convinced then ever that the United States . .. should respond now, before it is too late, to the proposals of .. . the Soviet Union, in taking . . . significant steps to stop the suicidal arms race,” the letter said. Amnesty is a world wide organization created for the purpose of freeing prisoners of conscience”, who have been jailed because lof their religious beliefs, sex, or political beliefs. The prisoners Amnesty attempts to help are never} iled for violent crimes, but for merely speaking their minds. These prisoners realize that often the only thin that can save them is a phone call from another govern. iment, or letters from Amnesty International. The members of Amnesty International spend their Imeetings discussing the prisoners and writing letters o! protest to the government of the country where the} prisoners are jailed. It is one of Amnesty’s policies never to send letters to the government of the country where that particular group is based. When prisoners are released, occasionally they or their friends or relatives write thank-you letters to Amnesty for helping them to be freed. Castlegar has one of the most active small-town branches of Amnesty International, more than 40 people trong.
