If declared a nuisance, the city would be able to clean up the site and bill the owner for the cost. The move comes four months after the Downtown Business Association complained to council that the property on which the historic hotel was once situated is unsafe. “Our Association requests the City of Castlegar take whatever steps it deems necessary to clean up the old Castlegar Hotel property.” the DBA said in a March 7 letter “In our opinion it is unsafe, un sightly, and gives a very poor impres sion of the downtown area.” The DBA added that it is trying to revitilize the downtown core and feels “this clean-up is very necessary.” The hotel was located on the corner of 3rd Street and 13th Avenue before it was destroyed by fire in 1962. The key issue in the dispute that has 4,000 workers involved in the selective Lumber Ltd. in Thrums said the strike by about 4,000 of B.C.’s 31,000 ers is not his mill. Ateo Lumber Ltd. in Fruitvale has so far avoided the issue one way or another because of the company’s annual summer shutdown. A spokesman at the company’s office said everyone at the mill is on holiday and will be back Aug. 5. She said the shutdown has nothing to do with the current labor dispute. The area's largest mill, Westar Timber Ltd.'s Southern Wood Pro ducts sawmill in Castlegar is ne a strikes is out of work to non-union companies. Pension benefits is another issue in the strike which began nine days ago. The contract is for workers and companies operating in the coastal and South Interior sectors of the province. The IWA and firms bargaining through the Council on Northern Interior Forest Employment Relations in Prince George signed a contract last week. Munro said the IWA has struck Northwood Pulp and Timber Ltd. in Prince George because Northwood bargains independently and would not continued UNSIGHTLY with wooden debris. As well, a number of the windews have not been boarded up. Ald. Carl Henne said the city has been trying “for a number of years” to contact the owner — Webchris Enter prises Ltd. — to have the site cleaned up “It's not very nice in the middle of the city,”- Henne admitted. The city has located the owner, who now lives in North Vancouver. How ever, Henne said, “He doesn't seem very interersted in doing anything whatsoever.” City clerk Betty Price said the city council intends to declare the property PREMISES . . . If the bill is not paid, the cost will be added to the tax notice, she said. Price said the city hasn't yet heard from the owner. In other council news, Castlegar plans to ask the provincial government to establish a government agent office here. “I really think it's time there was a provincial presence in this munici pality,” Mayor Audrey Moore said. The nearest government agent is in 12 meeting unless the owner cleons it up Rossland. 1 think our people have been travelling long enough,” Moore added, noting that Rossland’s government agent doesn’t serve as large an area as a government agent in Castlegar would. I think in this area a government agent would probably serve 15.000 people.” she said. Elsehwere, the Castlegar Chamber of Commerce asked council to impose a ban on “casual signs.” These signs are very unattractive and usually depict a area,” chamber administrator Ann Stasila said in a letter to council. Stasila pointed out there are bulletin boards for posting casual signs. aad
