By BARBARA TANDORY Special to the Castlegar News He was a publisher and she was a dream girl who called to place an'ad in his newspaper. She spoke the magic word, ‘““dream,'’ and quoted some figures with the number seven in them, and — since this was also in’ the seventh month, July — suddenly he knew that his soulmate had arrived. The actual meeting, half an hour later, only confirmed his certain knowledge that this was the girl from his dreams, literally. The unknown girl standing at his door was “the most familiar face’’ he'd ever seen in his life — familiar from dreams that started two years before. At this point all he had to do was to convince her that her feelings for the man currently in her life were just an ‘“‘illusion of Ppersonality’’ — and wait until she remembered the same dreams, their dredm meetings. It worked. A few days later, the two of them walked hand-in- hand on a beach in Virginia Beach, Va. @ personal fairy tale- like ‘story in Finding Your by Russ Michael, a lit- tle book now out of print but still available in some New Age bookstores, | The Age of Aquarius, the New Age, is supposed to be the age of soulmates, As throughout human history, this new age seems to be ‘expressing its misplaced idealism through war. But on a personal level of consciousness, in any ‘age, it is hard to live with war as an ideal and this yearning for a soulmate goes back to at least Platonic ideas, based on a belief in reincarnation and some kind of a meaningful destiny. In their private lives people still search for soulmates, Valentine's Day would not survive if it wasn’t based on a live ideal somewhere in the human soul. Michael — a former basketball star with the famous travelling House of David basketball team — claims in his book he has met three soulmates. “The Age of Aquarius is a group age," he says. ‘'The in- direet effect of this new energy has been to accentuate the theme ‘of soul mates." ( The past age, of Pisces, fostered individuality, according to Michael. Thus, the chances of finding one’s soulmate are said to be bet- ter than ever before in human history because ‘‘this Aquarian Age is bringing more soulmates into physical touch with each other than any preceeding age,”” Michael says. So how and where can you find your soulmate? The most likely place, it turns out, is at work or through work. That’s because prospective soulmates “‘will find themselves working at the same ideal, governed by the same purpose.”” For that reason, the book should perhaps carry a warning “contains ideas dangerous to the workplace by fostering romantic illusions of pte-destined meetings at the office.” But the author is serious enough about this point, by vir- tue of his own experience. After Book encourages office romance stating that fateful encounters occur, first of all in dreaming sleep, he stresses the point em- pathically in a chapter titled , “where to look'’. “The most obvious place to find your soulmate is in the field of your daily life, at work or play.” The principle is simple, if illusive. According to the author “twhen we are busy doing what we should be doing we stand a good chance of conjuncting with our soulmate, who happens(?) to be doing the same thing.”” (The question mark in this sentence questions the fact of coincidence when such a meeting occurs.) The book, however, is not a how-to-manual. In fact, his ad- vice is “to stop playing the field,’’. contrary to popular wisdom of modern psychologists who overwhelmingly promote the idea of Gating by volume to find the one suitable life companion. The idea behind this is that the soulmate already exists somewhere in the world — and sometimes more than one. Happy Valentine’s Day. “FROM THE DIRECTOR OF "BATMAN" ewe d B.C.
