Midget Girls Provincial Volleyball Championship game at Selkirk College Sunday. City teams tops at tourney NEWS STAFF The weekend battle for the Provincial Midget Girls Volleyball championship came down to a final meeting Sunday between the Island and the Lower Mainland. Victoria beat a Vancouver all- star team 3-1 (15-9, 14-16, 16- 14 and 15-10) at Selkirk College to win the 21-team tournament. And now both those teams, and third-place Penticton, will play in the Western Canadian National Championship in Vancouver in two weeks. The Kootenay Selects, coached by Mike Perra and with the only Castlegar player, Lisa Fomenoff, finished tied for samps draw basketball’s I SFU coach Allison McNeill, UBC’s Bruce Enns among those coming here to scout local talent. Ed Mills SPORTS EDITOR You don’t need to tell Allison McNeill how important the B.C. hinterland is to basketball in this province. She’s more. than fully acquainted with that fact. All the coach of the Simon Fraser University women’s ‘basketball team has to do to remind herself is look down the roster of her own team. Clan superstar Michelle Hendry is from Terrace, Mary Lou McDonald is from Cranbrook, two other graduating players are from Kamloops and third-year player Tracy Nazarchuk is from Hope. And she knows there has to be more where they came from. “Those kids are out there, it’s gure that sometimes they | might a) tha because they come ris the small schools. “But if they’ve got it in them, if it’s in their heart and they have it. in them, I don’t see any reason why they can’t make it,” said McNeill, herself a native of Princeton who went to high school in Salmon Arm. Knowing there are some diamonds in the rough is why McNeill, UBC men’s basketball coach Bruce Enns and a half- dozen other coaches from B.C. and Alberta will be in Castlegar.this weekend. Bringing them here is an opportunity to gauge the young talent in a pair of‘selection camps for girls and boys at Stanley Humphries secondary school. - They'll also be taking a good look at the senior crop of players in the Coca-Cola, Kootenay All- star Classic, two games being big names played at SHSS Saturday night. While McNeill is by no means coming here with a bag full of SFU sweaters ready to slap on the backs of a bunch of Kootenay girls, she is taking the trip seriously. “It’s not a charity trip, [take my job very seriously. I’m a full-time paid coach, I don’t teach up here, this is what I do. “And sol’mnot coming upthere ~ for a weekend of good times. I’m coming up to watch the players seriously,” said the fourth-year coach of the most successful women’s basketball program in the country. And as a onetime small-town girl herself, McNeill is also well acquainted with the lot many smaller centres have to live with. “I know about those things where people it just seems ignore what's going everywhere except the Lower Mainland. I just refuse to do that as long as I’m here.” McNeill, 32, said she’s not coming in with any predetermined idea of what she'll see here. “That's all part of recruiting. You watch a lot of players and you figure out a lot can’t play for you, but there’s always that one or two that you find. I'm pretty committed to getting the best ones, so it may be nothing. But I think it also may be something.” Among the local seniors McNeill will be eyeing are Rory Perrier, Kelly Davidoff, Lae Closkey, Wendy Closkey and Denise Gray. On the boys side, seniors Dan Kooznetsoff, Ryan Vatkin and Marcel Dusseault will play in the boys all-star game. And there will be at least as many local junior payers at the selection camps run for Basketball B.C. ie the SHSS - basketball coaches — where players are chosen for provincial camps to be held in July. The all-star games start at 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. on Saturday.
