THE MAYORALTY. The Miner’s ‘many old timers” of Rossland who have invited Gov- ernor McIntosh to be a candidate for firat mayor of the city had as well waited until the incorporation act beeomes a law, and see whether or not the Govervor will be eligible to hold that office. The bill will probably require the first mayor of Rossland to have been a registered property holder in Rossland and a resident for at least three months before’election. We feel sure that that Governor McIntosh does not want to be made». monkey of by expressing a willingness to be mayor when the chances are against him being eligible to the office. Again its ems a little odd for “nearly all the old timers” upon learning that‘a stranger is in town, to rush after and tear his clothes off pulling him into the mayoralty - chair. The Recoxp would not be understood as finding any fault with Mr. McIntosh or depreciating his ability and sylendid qualifica- tiuns to be Rossland’s first mayor. Granting all this to be true, he would show bad taste in seeking the office immediately upon his arrival in town, and no. better could be said of his friends who take this opportune time to mention his name in conncction with this or any other office. We do not be- lieve that Rosslard bas grown from a half dozen houses to a town of 7,000 people, within two years, without having plonty of mayoralty material. With all due respect to Governor McIntosh, the Rxcorp would favor some man who has put his shoulder to the wheel and assisted in making Rossland what she is today. HAWKS THAT MAKE TROUBLE. Trouble to the right of us, trouble tothe left of us, etc, While the “squatters” and Corbin have been at it,and Corbin and the Paris Belle peeple have been fighting, peace has reigned on the west eud of town. Because no notice has ‘been taken of the land adjoining the townsite on the west, Corbin has been quietly claiming that there was no dispute about the title of that portion of land claimed by his and has thereby in- dnced sume persons to buy lots of him. Yesterday - the owners of the Derby mining claim thanked one :|ment in expending, ; | Sufficient reason for it. the extraord- inary {of the district in such a short time isa good and Ifthe gov- ernment finds itself unable to ad- just its expenditure during the com- ing year in such a way as to assist this digtrict in maintaining public works in proportion to the Amount of its revenue it will be|N time enough to roast them. gee Had the Miner printed the names of ‘nearly all of the old timers” in Rossland who had p d Gov- ernor McIntosh to become a candi- date fur mayor, it would have been did not it is fair to presume that .| this is the first announcement of a slate which it is generally under- stood it is interested in, NEW MINING COMPANIES. A sure indication of the growth of the west Kootenay district is to be found in the great increaye in the revenue contributed to the provincial treasury during the year as shown by the public accounts for the fiscal year ending June 30, 1896. West Kootenay has made a larger increase in the revenue than any other district in the prov- ince, it having contributed more than one-eighth of the revenue of the whole province. In fact it doubled the t of its r 7 having increased it from sixty- odd thousand dollars to $122,904.
