Breast cancer, which strikes one in every 11 Can adian women, is the single biggest killer of women be tween 40 and 60. In conventional breast can cer treatment, after a biopsy reveals a lump is cancerous, the whole or a portion of the breast is surgically removed within 10 to 14 days, Ragaz said. Chemotherapy is then given to the woman about 30 days after the operation. In the Vancouver study, a random selection of women will be given the chemother apy within the first 10 days the cancer is diagnosed. They will then have surgery and additional chemotherapy if “In this way we are treat- ing the whole system first, then localizing treatment,” Ragaz said. Ragaz, a medical oncolo- gist, and surgeons Dr. Pat- ricia Rabbeck and Dr. Robert Baird, hope their study will involve at least 380 women suffering from beast cancer. In the first two years of the study, only 70 women have taken part, primarily because the researchers must rely on family doctors and surgeons detecting the lump to refer the woman to the study.
