It’s estimated there are about 12,000 beluga whales along: the southwestern Hudson Bay coast. Of that number, about 2,500 are in the immediate Churchill area. ‘The art of the hunt is to manoeuvre one of the alert, elusive whales into shallow water — about a metre deep —so that two “jumpers” can leap from the speeding craft to make the capture. , It can be tedious as well as exciting. The chase is affected by choppy water, clouds and tides up to five metres and it tests the skill, toughness and daring of participants. a The jumpers — the cold water cowboys — also are apt to lose a few teeth in the exercise or be knocked unconcious by lashing tails. . HEADED TO VANCOUVER Earlier in July, two whales were captured for the Vancouver public aquarium. George Hickes, one of the six brothers who with other friends have pioneered a special tactic for capturing _ Stefani Hewlett, the aqufrium’s staff biologist, recalled Kavna was pregnant at the time of her capture and is believed to be the first beluga ever to give birth to a calf in captivity. Howeyer, the calf later died. Hemlett and Jeremy Fitz-Gibbon, the aquarium's assistant chief mammal trainer, predict the three belugas will bet along well in Vancouver. OPERATION SUCCESS The aquarium representatives and Victoria -vet- erinarian James McBain, who kept check on the whales throughout the capture and will accompany them to Vancouver, said the operation was a success because the whales weren't injured. Hickes said beluga captures before the mid-60s were done with nets, which often resulted in bleeding fins and tails. In the latest operation, capturing the male. beluga was the most difficult. Jumper Al Oman was first to leap out of the boat and succeeded in placing the soft nylon lasso around its neck. Howver, the whale immediately began to drag Oman into deeper water. Back-up jumper Joe Hickes was able to straddle the beluga and fasten his legs around its fins, immobilizing it. Then George Hickes and Dennis Campayre quickly moved in and helped bring the three-metre long beluga, weighing about half a tonne, into the shallow water. It then was placed in.a stretcher and lifted into a daymares LOS’ ANGELES (AP) — Do ‘your datime fantasies wander toward disaster — the death of a loved one, a tragi¢ accident; discovering your spouse is cheating or finding yourself on skid road? In her book, she presents a poll of women earning more than $25,000 and offers illuminating anecdotes from her own interviews with career women across Canada. “Women can afford to take jobs they are interested in,” —~ Bassett said, referring to the 64 per cent of those polled who agreed women are more interested than men in jobs that are satisfying rather than those that help them get ahead. As Bassett indicates in some 300 pages, the diagnosis of what is holding women back is complex. There -are the familiar, external forces — discrimin- ation, sexual harassment and double standards at work. But Bassett said she was surprised by the statistics on the internal forces. For instance, over two-thirds of the women polled said they lack sefl-confidence.
