Tattoos become outlets
of personal expression

her jaunty black hat, her raspberry
red lips widening into a con-
spiratorial grin that hints the elegant
74-year-old Torontonian is up to
something.

“‘Would you like to see my tat-
toos?”’ she asks with the ii

deciding ‘‘Why not?’’ about getting
tattoos. ‘

No longer simply a mark of
brawny bikers and heavy
metalloids, the skin adornments are
becoming outlets of personal ex-
pression for everyone from glamor
gals and Olympic athletes to

Traditionally, the image of a tat-

dows and snarling heavyweights
wielding suspicious-looking needles.

That has faded.

Now many are gleaming businesses
where disease-conscious skin artists
wear Latex gloves, never use their
thrice-sterilized needles twice, and
counsel clients on the hygienic care
of their personalized emblems.

There is no known case of AIDS
resulting from tattooing, says the
National Tattoo Association, an
organization of American and
Canadian practitioners based in New
Hyde Park, N.Y.

The group is devoted to cleaning
up the image of what was once a
back-alley business.

Just after the tattoo needle
punctures beefy Bill’s bicep with
a nerve-numbing whirr, he asks
himself an important question.

“*Why am I doing this?”’

The blood drains from his face
as a Toronto tattooist injects
color into his skin. In half an
hour, the dermatological
needlepoint will be a sea-going
galleon.

But right now every prick of
pigment is pain for Bill, who
like many first-time tatoo wearers
is too self-conscious about his
skin decoration to go public.

Tattooing has been around for
centuries and it has always hurt.
New Zealand’s Maoris, credited
with elevating skin etching to a
high art, cut the emblems right
into the flesh and filled them
with color.

Japanese tattooists ‘aitached
needles to sticks and then
repeatedly jabbed the skin to in
ject the color.

Pain raises doubts
about skin decoration

symbols of their place in society.

But why do people get tattoos

“Tattoos are very strong st-
atements of identity,’ says
Catherine Chalin, a University of
Toronto behavioral scientist who
also works with street youth,
many of whom have skin et-
chings.

“‘Sometimes they're about
rebellion, other times about in-
dependence. They can even be
personal graffiti.

“And that’s just scratching the
surface.”’

Chalin says some people get
tattoos for practical reasons.
Drug addicts, for example, cover
their arms to disguise needle
marks. Others use skin art to
cover scars.

Prisoners sometimes use_tat-
toos as a kind of penal cod&—
the markings tell what jail they
were in and the crimes they
committed.

Ordinary people, though —

themselves to painful branding
because they thought fierce-
looking markings would frighten
off enemies. The Romans used
tattoos to brand slaves and
criminals, among other groups

Nineteenth-century European

toos because it’s personal ex-
pression that can’t be taken &way
from them by authorities such as
parents: Sometimes a tattoo is a
teen’s first brazen independent
act, Chalin says.

“I know a kid who tattoos

-while women prefer to decorate

poetry on his back — or rather,
his girlfriend does," she says.
“But his spelling is atrocious.

**So he has a back filled with
misspelled poetry.”

Sociologist Clinton Sanders of
the University of Connecticut say
people use tattoos to manipulate
their self-image. Their’ skin
markings symbolize their af-
filiation with something — such
as the idea of masculinity or a
subculture like outlaw bikers —
or their isolation from the rest of
the world.

In his 1989 book Customizing
the Body, a scholarly work on
tattooing, “Sanders writes that
most men put their emblems on
highly visible places like biceps,

to give birth to left-handed babies, a
study at the University of British
Columbia has found.

Stanley Coren, a psychology
professor, based his conclusions on
interview with more than 2,000
university students over five years.
For women 25 to 29, the chance was
11 per cent higher than for women
17 to 24, he found.

The chance of women over 40
having left-handed babies increased
by 128 per cent over 17- to 24-year-
