The Gastlegar Sun a Wednesday, August 26, 1992 SUBMITTED Bluetop ax, Burger cl With the help of today's high-powered and sophisticated computer hardware and soft- ware, a Canadian company has implemented a revolutionary job recruitment system that has the potential of significantly to put all the pieces together,” said Jobs Canada Inc. president, Geoff Edmunds, “but we are the first company in Canada to utilize the power of the computer to match the right candidate with the right job, quickly and cost-effectively. People looking for work, both the unem- ployed and| those who have a job but are seeking a new challenge, forward their resumes to Jobs Canada where they are scanned and entered as exact copies into the National Employment Reg- istry datab he are the information.fiecded by an employer and return it to us."\ Within 24 hours of receiving the resume, Jobs/Canada will have d into the Registry coded and stored andet one or more specific job categories. The registrants pay a $20 fee to cover the costs of coding and entering their resumes which will remain on the Registry for three months. However, Jobs Canada is increasing this registration period to six months for resumes submit- ted before the end of September. Edmunds explains’ that “it will take us two or three months to build up the database so the first three months of registration are included at no additional charge.” Over the next several months Jobs Canada will be undertaking an extensive advertising cam- paign directed at both job seekers and employers. Candidates will be informed how they can put where it will be exposed to vari- ous employment opportunities across the country, some of which the candidate may not have known existed. Moreover, the job seeker’s $20 investment frees them from the time consuming tasks of poring over newspapers and writing letters. The National Employment Registry’s computer “pounds the pavement” on their behalf. If candidates have not accepted a position before the end of the registration period, they will be advised how many times their resumes were accessed by employers and asked if they wish to re-register. This feed- back may be helpful in improv- ing a candidate's resume and job their into the Employment Registry. President Edmunds states “Jobs Canada has tried to make it very simple. By calling 1-800-268-JOBS, candi- dates will be given details of the system and an address where they can send their resumes. Those persons who may not have a resume will be sent a resume form on which they can supply PP With all candidates, complete confidentiality is assured. The employer is charged $3.50 for each resume sent. Edmunds points out that this is “a fraction of the cost of traditional recruit- ment where the cost of one ad in a major newspaper can easily reach or exceed $5,000. In addi- tion, the employer has the resumes on his desk the next morning and can call the candi- dates immediately instead of waiting the two or three weeks necessary to place the ad and receive the responses. In busi- ness, time is money when you have an unfilled position.” The National Employment Registry concept was conceived by Edmunds when a small busi- nessman friends was unable to fill a vacant position. The friend, Carl Lacey, ran a floor finishing company and one of his drum sander operators has walked out on him without notice. Mr. Lacey was losing business while he placed ads in several BC papers and a job order with the local Employment office. Two weeks went by and Mr. Lacey had received no response to these efforts. Companies will receive free access code booklets containing an exhaustive list of occupations in all industries and their corre- sponding four digit codes. Employers will be encouraged to access the database over a “I- 800” number using a touchtone phone. Using simple voice instructions, the National Lacey ly did find some- one in Calgary but not before los- ing thousands in foregone business. His friend's difficulties in find- ing a qualified employee led to Edmund's realization that, as he puts it, “Canada lacks a compre- hensive, up-to-date and cost-effi- cient communications’ tink between employers and job seek- ers. Jobs Canada - The National Employ Registry comp will tell the employer to enter the code for the position to be filled. The computer will then ask for further details such as the loca- tion of the job and the desired years of experience. Once these questions. are answered the computer will advise the employer how many resumes on file satisfy the employer's requirements and will ploy Registry has har- nessed the power and speed of the computer to provide a one- step resume marketplace for job seekers and employers.” Job candidates can call 1-800- 268-JOBS for information on how to register their resumes on the National Employment Reg- istry. Action at Thursday evening at 8 p.m. the H.R. MacMillan Planetarium and the observatory bring their the park! Jerry the moose! Stay around for the evening too, as Selkirk College instructor Being perfect means being predictable I checked out the mirror the other day and realized I truly am happy these days. Despite the fact that I’ve taken on every major Stress since birth during the past two years, I am happy! The best part is I actually know why. Not too long ago, my anxiety about life in general would find me questioning a strange “happy” feeling and wondering when the blow was going to come. How was I to know that happiness had little to do with chance and every- thing to do with attitude and per- ception, Actually I did have a suspicion about that and told myself every day that I had no reason to be unhappy while I reminded myself of all the bless- ings-in my life. While that did keep me from dragging the bot- tom I was still in emotional trou- ble. Of course being the good little perfectionist that I was (am?) self-punishment was the only way I knew how to survive. But I have it figured now. I finally, for the first time in my life am being true to myself. I know what I want from myself and my relationships and accept no less. High expectations? You bet! One thing I have learned though is to be very careful what you ask for, because you just might get it and it isn’t always as it appeared in your dreams cither. In my case, far from it. For instance, I wanted a career change, a wonderful relationship and children, oh, and a new Body too. Well, let me give you a little background. I was most of my life a very insecure individual. Yeah, I know we all have them, but mine bordered on “paranoid”. I was afraid of everything, most of all myself and my own fear. Now how smart is that, fear of fear? Have you ever heard of any- thing like it? Unfortunately it’s common ailment in our society today and a major motivator towards substance abuse. Speak- ing for myself, I had a dire need to belong and be accepted. Well, I did everything “cool”. I’m thankful for my “paranoia’ back then which turned me into a “chicken” when it came to any- thing too bizarre. Well, then came alcohol and the feeling of excite- ment and belonging that accom- panied a “drink”. Now don't get me wrong, I have no regrets but have learned my lessons well. I left a 10 year marriage and a very dear friend behind in the process of “cleaning up my life”. That was four years ago and during that time I've made every effort to find the “real” me and let her out to live. Darn she’s a stub- born lady sometimes. Thick head- ed too. What was wrong with my anyway? Why couldn't I just BE HAPPY? Well, how many of us go through our lives in search of the Ann Landers Dear Ann Landers: My boyfriend and I are middle- aged and living together. “Billy” believes his parents should have open access to our home. I do not agree and we've had some unpleasant words about this. His folks knock on our door at least twice every weekend. A while back they took a key to our house without permission _ and now they tome in advice because I know what I have to do, and I'm going to do it. What I really want to know, Ann, is how typical this behav- ior is. Please spell it out for me. -- Open Door Policy in Green- wood, Miss. Dear Open Door: The kind of behavior you describe is not at all typical. It exists only in families where the parents dominate and treat their grown er they feel like it. I wouldn't mind them having the key if they'd just let us know when they're planning to come over. In addition to this, Ann, his parents expect to be included in our plans every weekend. I feel that I have no privacy anymore. Billy insists that everybody he knows sees their parents every weekend and that his relation- ship with his folks is not unusu- al. I come from an independent family and I'm not accustomed to the way these people cling together and have no interests that don't include each other. My family is very caring, but we give one another space to live our own lives, I'm really not asking for al sgns.and daughters like chil- dren. The fact that your boyfriend doesn't resent this and feels that it's "normal" says something about his inability to cut the apron strings. This is a subject that needs exploring before you consider marriage. I see red lights flashing all over the place. ultimate happiness? Or even a taste of it will do, thank you very much, And how many of us are strong enough to admit it? Some- how accepting the fact that I was unhappy scared the heck out of me. As I said before, be very careful what you ask for ... It took me two years to get definite on what I wanted (nobody told mie I would be constantly updating that one, or that it was OK to do so). Then I dared to dream. Well, hop on the rollercoaster Brenda baby, and for heavens sake, do your safety belt. In two years all of my have come true, not all I have recognized initially, but I'll share the major ones. I now have the healthy relationship I didn't dare dream existed. It was only 1 when I let go, established a rela- 1 tionship with “me” and realized 1 that I could live by myself forev- 1 er, lonely maybe but I cold sur- 4 vive. Aha, with no need for that “Mr. Right” motivating me, he H walked into my life and scared fl the heck out of me. Not only that, 1 he brought two beautiful children 1 with him. And then he had the nerve to ask me to move away with him to this new town. Well, my career definitely changed in a hurry, I was an instant MOM and betrothed to the nicest guy I've ever known. Now here was the test for my faith, I knew this time I had to be true to myself, set some boundaries, and make some darn good agreements. Oh, it's been a tad stressful at times, no doubt about it. But I now am at with who I am and what I want. I no longer allow events and circumstances, people or lack of them, to control my comfort and happiness. I am confident and create my own results. And no, I'm still not per- fect (darn it anyway). Besides, that would be to predictable. ROYAL CANADIAN LEGION Branch 170 " 7 vents ul be announced os thay are scheduled.
