This week's retirees golf at the upper course was by far the best day and the best attendance we've bad all season, with 75 golfers out. As I told you last week, two gentlemen by the names of St. Jean and Proulx were to run things. But by the time I arrived they bad things under control and Marcel went out in a foursome and Joe Riley was helping Herbie. I didn't expect to see Joe because he was supposed to be in Mexico watching the World Cup, but there was a foul-up in the arrangements and Joe decided to watch bis on TV. Anyday, back to golf. We played the white tees, low gross, low net and closest to the pin on number five witli Sam Anselmo winning the gross with a 38, closely followed by Jack Buchanan with a 39. Marcel Proulx won the low net followed by Al Rella and Vic Bordin and Chris Cbristlanson was closest to the pin on number five with a putt left of about 25 feet for bis birdie. Next week Chris and I will be in charge and I've been wracking my brains for something new. I did suggest everyone play cross-banded, but people seem to think that this would give Chris and Bob Evans, who both play that way, an unfair advantage. So I'll talk to Chris and we'll dream up something. You know you'll have fun anyway, so come on out and enjoy. Three weeks away is the Legion zone golf tournament at New Denver. June 7.8 is the date and this year it is being thrown open to all members, ordinary, associate, fraternal, and L.A., to participate. This is a first and we shall see bow it is going to work. I have not beard yet if they are going to apply these rules to the East-West event in Creston later this summer. Maybe they are waiting to see bow this one comes out. The Canadian soccer team showed a lot of moxie in their first-ever World Cup contest. I was happy to see a really well-played contest. Actually the score could ba\r.e been much higher in France's favor but they missed a lot of perfect cbancea. However, it only took one goal to do it. I thought Canada could have bad a goal or two but it was not to be. Playing in the section they are in which is · probably the toughest of them all. Tbe Soviets, Hungary and France are all good and have a lot of soccer experience behind them, while Canada is coming in new to this type of competition. I didn't see them play in their first game but people who did say the Soviets are really something. We'll just have to hope our guys can give us a good show in the game against them and hope they won't have too much to be ashamed of. I beard a rumor that the Trail-Port Moody fitness participation .contest ended in a tie: Is this the final result or are they going to give us some morefigures? The gardens around t<,wn are starting to show some life with last week's change in the weather picture. Let's hope that we get some suitable weather for the things that are now growing. I hope we don't get any weather that will set them back as bas happened previously. I attended men's night at the upper course last Wednesday along wttlrCartOstng, Bart Dudley and Amie Sherwood. We lad a nice supper and I woo a . ball for last putts. Several players bad leu than I did ( 15) but we all got a ball and we'll play again this I shot poorly on Tuesday, so I hope it improves for this week.
